Allow me to introduce myself: I’m Jenn, Art Director and Contributing Editor for Weddingbells. I’m also a bride-to-be! With just under three months left until my wedding day (November 23rd at the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn, California), and a strapless dress on order, I wanted to kick-start my workout to look California-girl-gorgeous! So when I was presented with an opportunity to participate in a bootcamp, I jumped at the chance to team up with the crew at Best Body Bootcamp.
WEEK ONE
Apparently bootcamp happens in the AM. Really early. Before work, before coffee, before sunshine. But it’s Day 1, and I’m up! Although I’m nervous (and hating my workout wardrobe), I am also excited to, well, have my butt-kicked. I arrive at the park (my bootcamp is outside) and meet my trainer Roger who’s also the owner of Best Body Bootcamp. I have tons of questions for him—I’m pretty sure he’s wondering what he has signed himself up for. When he reviews the routine with me which includes “scorpions,” “suicides,” and “sumo squats,” I’m wondering what I signed myself up for.
Before the workout, Roger does a fitness assessment and takes measurements (every girl’s favourite thing). Then the real work begins. I’m not going to lie—it was a killer workout, and I barely made it through. Roger assured me this is not uncommon for the first session, but I’m determined to get through the next workout. During my bootcamp program, I meet with Roger once a week, and then do two workouts on my own (I drag my fiancé Dave out with to sub in for Roger). I’m proud to say I been sticking to it. Strapless dress, here I come!
Week One Tips
Eat! Do not workout on an empty stomach! I have a banana with peanut butter and a HUGE glass of water. When I get back from the workout, I help my muscles recover with protein like a large glass of chocolate milk/protein shake or a poached eggs.
Drink! Hydrate before, during and after your workout. The workout is intense, and the trainers want you to sweat, but they don’t want you to pass out either. Bring water.
And be Merry! Laugh at yourself when you make a mistake and pat yourself on the back when you hit the 40th squat. It will make those early mornings easier if you’re having fun.
We want to know: Have you recently started or changed your workout routine? If so, what are you doing?
