Best Beach

I had the great pleasure of staying at The Crane Hotel in Barbados last month. This is one of the few hotels on the east coast of Barbados facing the wide open Atlantic Ocean (think a steady, strong breeze coming off the coast at most times). Situated at the top of a cliff, above one of the most picturesque beaches I’ve ever laid eyes on, The Crane is definitely a great place for weddings. Apparently, Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous (remember Robin Leach?) named it one of the “ten best beaches” in the world!

Part of the main hotel building is restored from the island’s original hotel, and one of the bars was once a prison! It’s fun to imagine the incredible history of the hotel, and realize that guests at the original hotel back in the late nineteenth century could never have dreamt what direction this property would take in the twenty-first century!

In speaking with one of the locals, apparently Crane beach was once so secluded considering the 100+ stairs to get down (the hotel has since put in a glass elevator), it used to be a place where women secretly came to bathe in the ocean, as they had heard about the healing nature of salt water. In the nineteenth century it was inappropriate for women to bathe in public, let alone wear bathing suits, so this was sort of a “secret beach” they could use.

On the destination wedding front, The Crane is filled with great history but also new buildings and venues. It has great indoor space for wedding receptions! I’m usually not a big promoter of the indoor space for an island wedding because we have lots of great local indoor spaces–that said, their ballroom is beautiful. Wood ceilings with exposed beams, a nice dance floor and it’s next to the ocean. It’s the perfect amount of space for a medium-sized group and, when set up with the proper decor, this is a great location. For more information, visit http://www.thecrane.com to check out this gem. Here’s to champagne wishes and caviar dreams!
