Something Cold, Something Blue

So far in our wedding plans, David and I haven’t really encountered too many challenges. Well, other than losing half the wedding party and my dress disappearing along with the retailer – but that’s all part of the fun, right? Though we’ve become hooked on Say Yes to the Dress as well as Rich Bride, Poor Bride (don’t tell, but I may have received a text message now and then making sure I set the PVR!), the thing that’s surprised me the most is the lack of drama that seems to go along with wedding planning on these shows.  But that’s not to say there isn’t one teensy issue proving a little difficult: the whole ‘winter’ thing.

At the beginning of my blogging journey here, one of the big issues was finding outerwear for the wedding party, which proved quite the challenge. You were all rock stars in helping me out – and a HUGE thank you must be said for all the comments (and e-mails, with more online shopping options than I could shake a credit card at)! Outerwear for us has since been located – we found perfect coats (at Superstore of all places!), but that’s not where the challenge ended. We have guests to keep warm! One of the biggest things we want to ensure in this winter wedding is everyone’s comfort. Read the rest of this entry »

Wedding Belle: A Blushing Bride

Bride: Lara Nesplak
Wedding Date:
August 22, 2009
Wedding Location:
Winnipeg, Manitoba
Wedding Style:
This wedding had pretty in pink written all over it! Lara’s girlish charm shone through in every way- from her sweetheart gown with a big bow on the side to the bright pink roses that dominated her bouquet. Lara wore her beautiful, red hair down in loose waves that looked oh-so-natural with a mid-length veil. Her favourite girls also looked fun-loving and feminine in their bright pink cocktail dresses that matched the groomsmen’s ties perfectly. Lara definitely got her dream of having a “garden wedding with lots of pink and polka dots!”
The Look:
Bridal Gown, Evalina Couture (evalinacouture.com). Flowers, Timeless Florals (204-832-2419). Hair, Salon One (403-279-9191). Makeup, Buttercup Beauty Bar (buttercupbeautybar.com). Cake, Chef Angela at Pineridge Hollow (pineridgehollow.com). Read the rest of this entry »

Let’s Face the Music…and (TRY to) Dance

So far in my blogging journey, I’d like to think you’ve been able to get to know me pretty well. In that I’m terrified of the cold (yet having a wedding in the dead of winter), I’m a DIY enthusiast, willing to dump eggs all over my head, dress up as a medieval princess, an eternal optimist, proudly English, poor, and maybe slightly too much of a nerd.  (Nice to meet you!)  But aside from all that, one of the things I’m most passionate about in life is music.

We’re really trying to incorporate fun, personality, and things that really are meaningful for us into our wedding. Short of hiring a kitten-shaped tux and training our little cat on the concept of “straight line,” I think we’re doing quite well! Music is a big part of both our lives, so naturally this was an area in which we could have a little fun.

Our ceremony will be at David’s church. Traditionally Roman Catholic, there are certain restrictions on the sort of music that can be played. Let’s just say my dreams of walking down the aisle to the Star Trek: TNG theme have gone firmly out the window. Luckily, David plays in the church band with one of the city’s best local musicians, part of a duo who are kindly going to sing at the ceremony. He’s wonderfully talented, fun, and down to earth, and I can’t wait to hear them perform! Read the rest of this entry »

The Recessionista Bride’s DIY Guide

It’s a pretty safe bet to say that we’re far from having the biggest wedding budget in the world. So when times are tight, what better way to save money (and have far too much fun!) than to attempt many brides’ favourite thing: DIY projects!  I know I’ve been talking about my über-nerdy cake toppers for a while, but they’re not the only thing we’re doing ourselves. We’re also making our invitations, and centrepieces too. So without further ado, I bring you my DIY Guide for the Recessionista Bride! Read the rest of this entry »

Going to the Chapel and We’re Gonna Get Married

{Proof that we were destined to be married.}

*We’re not really getting married in a chapel; I just really like that song. I was actually singing it after we met with the priest…hehe*

It was important for both me and Mark to be wed in a church so what better a church than the one that plays a big part in both of our lives? St. Edwards Roman Catholic Church is not only the church that my family has been attending masses at all my life, but it is also where Mark attended elementary school. Can you believe that Mark and I actually had our first communion’s together and had no clue? It’s true! A few years ago, I was flipping through Mark’s childhood photo albums and when I got to the photos of his first communion, there was something strangely familiar with the photo. I visually scanned the photo and sure enough, I found my young self in the very same picture! Many years since that photo, Mark will once again be in a white tuxedo and I will once again be in a white dress and veil; walking down the very aisle that has been the central point of my day dreams since I was a little girl. Real Wedding: Maui, Hawaii

I LOVE this wedding. And, not because I’m partially bias to Hawaii (it’s my dream destination location), but I’m truly inspired by the gorgeous details. Liz, our associate publisher from Winnipeg, was the one who highlighted the wedding for me from Jake + Jess of Kampphotography. The couple, Melissa and Kirk looked absolutely stunning and for me, symbolize what a destination wedding couple should look like–happy! Everything from the pretty white floral details to their pineapple-based cocktail drinks embodied the laid-back yet elegant spirit of the island. Check out Jake + Jess’s blog for more romantic images.

Social Studies

One of the things that make Manitoba and its social scene quite unique is something that most provinces don’t normally do: the wedding social. If you have family, friends or have lived in Manitoba, I’m sure you’re quite aware that the wedding social is just like snow to Manitoba; they come hand-in-hand. In talking to some friends who were born and raised in beautiful British Columbia I realized that the whole concept of having a social is very misunderstood to outsiders. So here is an insider look at “The Winnipeg Wedding Social.”

A wedding social is one big party with food, drinks (non-alcoholic and alcoholic), silent auctions and sometimes entertainment. While a wedding social is normally held to raise funds for your wedding, it would also give Mark and me a chance to party with everyone as we are blessed with a huge family and many friends; raising funds is just a bonus.
I’ve put together some wedding social planning tips which I’ve recently learned as we’re heavy into our social planning. Read the rest of this entry »

Saying *sniffsniffBAWL* to the Dress

"Head light" dress – LOL!

"Head light" dress – LOL!

One week after the Wonderful Wedding Show, on a beautiful winter morning, my girls and I (minus my mom because she was close to tears at the wedding show and couldn’t do it again) found ourselves at L.A. Collection—our first stop in my hunt. Julie, our consultant for the day, already had a dressing room ready—she had the dress I tried on at the Wonderful Wedding Show as well as a few dresses she pulled that were similar to that dress. Girls present: maid of of honour (MOH), my three best friends, my daughter and sister-in-law. Read the rest of this entry »
