Delightful Dahlias

{image via The Garden Decor Store}

The other week I blogged about Glamelia’s and how pretty they were. Hoping to get more info on the process (it does take quite a bit of time to construct something so delicate and gorgeous) I made a quick trip to visit Jenn, a florist at Flour Studio. She had told me that Glamelia’s were very pretty, but agreed they would be delicate and need some major TLC during your wedding day. They could also be a tad pricier–depending on size.

As an alternative, Jenn suggested dinner plate dahlias (these are single stemmed florals which can range up to 30cm in diameter–hence the dinner plate term). Read the rest of this entry »

Wedding Belle: Luxurious and Cultural

Bride: Hena Awan
Wedding Date:
October 10, 2009
Wedding Location:
Toronto, Ontario
Wedding Style:
Hena’s spectacular style consisted of three gorgeous dresses for three fantastic ceremonies. During Hena’s Nikkah (pre-wedding ceremony where vows are exchanged) Hena wore a bright yellow traditional Pakistani dress with exquisite silver and orange embellishments. A long see-through red veil draped over her head until she took it off to reveal her beautiful makeup. Yellow and orange eyeshadow matched her outfit perfectly, while her soft peach lips kept the eyes her main focus.
During Hena’s Mehendi (pre-wedding ceremony to get the couple ready for marriage) she stunned in a ravishing cultural outfit, which was dominated by plum purples, teals and magentas. The gorgeous embroidery and colours brought together all the hues of the Arabian themed ceremony. As for makeup, Hena says, “I remember asking her to go bold and wild with the eyes–and boy did she deliver!” Hena’s eyes were played up with a smoky cat eye look dominated by deep purples and dark greys. Her long, brown tresses were left loose in natural-looking waves.
During Hena’s wedding day, Hena wore a custom-designed traditional Pakistani bright red dress with plenty of dazzling gold embroidery and beading. She wore a veil of the same material and beading, along with a similar small purse. “I wanted to have an extremely traditional look on my wedding day,” Hena says. Her beautiful cultural look continued into the gold headpiece, bangles, chandelier earrings and chunky necklace she wore. This bride’s long brown hair was pulled away from her face into a braided knot bun to support her heavy veil. Hena’s bold and beautiful makeup consisted of dark, smoky eyes and fantastic red lips. Hena sought after a wedding inspired by the traditions of Mughal, India. “I wanted to look regal and give off the image of being in a palace.” Hena’s stunning and rich wedding style corresponded perfectly with the luxurious feeling of the ceremony, and Hena looked like true royalty!

Wedding Belle: Charming & Fun

Bride: Leana DiClemente
Wedding Date:
October 10, 2009
Wedding Location:
Mississauga, Ontario
Wedding Style:
Leana’s wedding style was fun and charming during her autumn wedding. Her perfectly fitted trumpet-style gown was made of lace and tulle over taffeta and had elegant lace straps. Silver embroidery, Swarovski crystals and a corset lace-up back added even more charming detail to the gown. In addition to being naturally charming Leana says, “I wanted the day to be fun and easy and my dress was light and easy to move and dance in!” In theme with this fun day, Leana held a bouquet of bright orange roses with the stems wrapped in gold, making it feel like a true fall wedding. This beauty kept her makeup natural looking with focus on the eyes and a touch of dark pink on the lips. Choosing not to wear a veil, Leana wore her brown tresses down and curly but pulled back from her face to reveal a pair of fabulous chandelier earrings made of Swarovski beads and crystals. Leana’s best girls wore fun and flirty black cocktail dresses and her groom wore a gold vest under his tux, in keeping with the gold, white and black theme.

Current Obsession: The Caketress

I’ve worked with Lori from The Caketress in the past, and her work and talent never cease to amaze me. Couture and luxurious are definitely the correct words to describe her confections–but as a person and cake designer–Lori is simply down to earth and very easy to get along with. I was so inspired by her three recent wedding cakes that I felt the need to share.

Lori’s description: It’s almost always that I use smooth fondant for decorating wedding cakes because the artistic possibilities are endless. Christy the bride , however loved the look of rustic rolled white chocolate for her golden wedding cake to be served up north at Taboo Resort. This four tier oval golden cake needed to match the old world feel to her wedding decor , crafted by Muskoka’s leading decor team , Eventdecorator.com. Filled with raspberries and white chocolate ganache, this cake screamed decadence. Handed made sugar flowers, each uniquely painted in actual gold finished this beautiful and delicious cake.

Lori’s description: This pink and coral elegant designer wedding cake made it’s way up north for a reception at one of my favorite Muskoka venue’s for nothern weddings , The Rosseau.  The rich flavour of this three tier square cake was an Opera Cake (top two) and the bottom was a Lemon Cake. Both favourites of the Bride and Groom.  The delicate  piping was based on the lovely invitations the bride had choosen, and the falling pink blossoms and coral hydrangeas gave the right pop of colour for their elegant affair up north.

Lori’s description: Wow what a week it was. It was a fun packed week of designing wedding cakes. One them was Meghan and Rob’s contemporary deep purple and apple green wedding cake. This three tier square cake covered  pleated stripes and sugar flowers, was made to flavor one of their favourite sweet treats , a peppermint patty. A fun flavour for this very fun couple.

Post-Wedding Celebration

There can only be one word used to describe a celebration like this–GORGEOUS! I love it. I love it. I love it. The details are so inspiring and the couple themselves are too cute for words. Here’s what the photographers (the talented pros over at Mango Studios) had to say about the soiree:

What an amazing day with Diana and Elson! Although they had already had a small intimate wedding is sunny LA, they had their big party for family and friends back here in Toronto. We started off with some eclectic shots around the Gladstone Hotel, then over to the Evergreen Brickworks for a fun tandem bike ride, and then flew over to Archeo in the Distillery for an amazing lunch. Although the day started off grey and rain soaked, we ended up with a bright and sunny afternoon for the party. The main focus of the day though were the details! The room looked beautiful with the help of the amazing planner Melissa Samborski from One Fine Day, and Diana herself who hand made lots of the decor! Check it out for yourself below.

Quirky Engagement Photos

I like LOVE the look of fun engagement photos. I think they bring out the friendly side of every couple–definitely a great way to show off your quirky yet loving personalities. This particular one, which was recently shot by Claudia Hung, is truly too cute for words. I enjoy the simple yet humorous nature of it all. On the plus side, engagement photos are usually a must in my book a) because you can test the chemistry between you and your wedding photographer (i.e. do you jibe well, is there an easy and comfortable connection, etc.) and b) you can check out the quality of their work in print. Have you gotten your engagement photos yet? Would love to hear all about your experience.

Secret Spa Find in Toronto

Photography courtesy Anna Lisa Sang.

Well after this it’s not going to be so much of a secret anymore, but for any of you brides looking for some pre-wedding pampering wit(or better yet a bachelorette), consider getting treated at Red Door located at the Che Bella Spa in Toronto (Eglinton and Avenue Rd). Tucked away on a side street, there isn’t much signage for the spa, except of course for the bright red door leading up to the spa. The signature treatment offered here is the blissful 45-minute foot massages. Funny when relax your feet, your whole body seems to relax too! The spa has eight technicians and chairs, and the spa holds about 30 people comfortably, so it’s definitely possible to have an intimate spa party.

We love that it’s not your “typical” spa venue and is totally customizable for your party too. You can bring in your own food and drinks, which is also a bonus too! Party or not, it’s a super chill place to unwind and relax.
