5 Hot Bridal Fashion Trends for 2012

Are you planning a 2012 wedding? We asked James Fang, owner of the White on White bridal collection what trends he’s loving for the coming year. Keep your eyes peeled for these hot trends when you hit the shops:

1. Sexy Structure. According to Fang, most brides are still loving strapless styles, which means an impeccable fit is paramount—there’s nothing worse than a bride hiking up her gown all day. To that end, White on White’s latest gowns have more built-in (hidden!) structure to ensure you are lifted and cinched in all the right places.

2. 3-D Beading. Brides can’t get enough elaborate, dramatic beading, says Fang. At White on White, ribbons, rosettes, pearls and crystals are all incorporated by hand. The “Valentina” gown with its blinged-out bodice (see photo above) is a perfect example of this hot trend.

3. Luxurious Lace. Thanks in part to Kate Middleton’s lovely lace wedding dress, this traditional bridal fabric is having a major moment. Indeed, Fang has noticed more brides asking for lace accents. Speaking of which, a little bit of lace on the bodice of your dress is a great way to incorporate this trend if you don’t want to embrace it wholeheartedly (à la Kate’s full-length sleeves).

4. Two-in-one Looks. Want to switch up your outfit for the reception? You’re not alone. Fang says more and more brides are asking for gowns with removable trains and straps, as well as dresses with matching boleros and jackets. This is a budget-friendly trend if ever I saw one—why buy two dresses when you could have one that does double duty?

5. Tulle Accents. Tulle is the ultimate girly fabric, and it’s big for 2012—literally! Look for ballgowns with massive layered skirts and fluffy ruffles galore, says Fang.

New Kid on the Block: David’s Bridal

A beautiful gown by Oleg Cassini exclusively for David's Bridal.

Budget-savvy brides, rejoice! Mega wedding fashion retailer David’s Bridal is coming to Canada! For years, Canadian brides have been trekking across the border (to one of 300 David’s Bridal locations in the U.S.) in search of amazing deals, but those days are gone. In March 2011, the chain will open two stores in Ontario (one in Mississauga and one in Scarborough), and you’ll be able to find your dream dress (as well as bridesmaid dresses and accessories) right here at home. As if this news isn’t exciting enough, we’ve also received word that Vera Wang—the one and only—is designing an affordable collection exclusively for David’s Bridal. We can’t wait to see the White by Vera Wang collection (as well as all the other goodies that are sure to be in store).

Goody Two Shoes

The ultimate "something blue": Martinez Valero shoes from Zappos.com.

This post is dedicated to my colleague, Jenn, who just found her perfect wedding shoes during an impromptu lunchtime jaunt to the mall! They’re beautiful, and so totally her! But for those of you ladies who are still searching for the ones, here are four helpful tips from Brooke Hyden, style guru and visual merchandising strategist for Zappos.com.

1) Make sure your heels are the right height. Consider the length of your dress (a long gown should just skim the ground) and your mister’s height in comparison to yours. Think about your wedding photos—you don’t want to tower over the rest of your party, nor do you want to get lost in the crowd!

2) Match your shoes to your wedding style. Stilettos may not be the best choice for an outdoor ceremony, and flip-flops are way too casual for a formal affair.

3) Try colour for your wedding shoes. White, ivory, gold and silver will always be in style, but brightly coloured shoes are definitely on the rise. This is your chance to splurge on an unforgettable “something blue.”

4) Pick shoes that are comfortable for you. If you’ve never worn platform pumps now is definitely not the time to try them on for size. Stick to a heel height and shoe style you have worn often in your day-to-day life.

Happy shoe shopping, ladies!

From left to right - Kerrie, my best friend and MOH - Mikayla, my cousin and BM - Kendra, my cousin and BM - and me!

I don’t know if it’s just me, but I’m at the five-month mark now, and I’m starting to get a little nervous. I feel like I still have so much to do! Especially with our house being built, there are so many decisions to make!

My task with my bridesmaids and maid of honour this month was to get those bridesmaids dresses found and off the to-do list. Well, we’re already nearing the end of February and we didn’t make much progress so far. We originally planned for the first week of February, but my maid of honour got a job offer 13 hours away, with a week’s notice to move out there! And my mom ended up being out of town for work, so we moved our plans back a few weeks. Read the rest of this entry »

Once You Go, You Know

When it comes to Jamaica, they say, “Once you go, you know.” And when it comes to your wedding dress, they say, “When you know, you know.” Let me tell you, they were so right! After making the decision to have our wedding in Jamaica, the next thing I did was start looking online for dress ideas. I spent hours and hours on wedding websites, poring through wedding magazines and even browsing through random “so-and-so’s wedding” albums on Facebook (I admit it, I’m a Facebook creeper…don’t judge me, you know you’ve done it, too! haha). After a few months of this “research,” I’d bookmarked a ton of dresses that I absolutely loved, and I was totally sure I’d end up with one of those dresses.
