Q: I’m in the early stages of my wedding planning, and I’m starting to get really stressed out. I’ve been going back and forth with the idea of hiring a wedding planner. I don’t know anyone who has ever had one. What do wedding planners do? How much do they cost on average? Can you give me some tips as to how to choose a planner?

Urge to Splurge
Q. I‘ve been anxiously waiting to get married for the past five years now but my wedding keeps getting postponed due to money problems. I know the colours and the theme I want for my wedding. I was thinking of buying my wedding things little by little up until the big day. There is no set date yet, what should I start buying first?
A. Like it or not we are creatures of change. You may have an idea of your theme and colour scheme, but that doesn’t mean you won’t regret a purchase. Instead of buying things little by little, start saving little by little. Open a special savings account at your bank and every time you get the urge to splurge put that money into your new account. That way, by the time you’ve set a date, you’ll have that much-needed money set aside for all of your W-day expenses.

Money and Manners
Q: After our main wedding in Toronto, my fiancé and I will be going back to his home of South Africa to have a small reception for family and to celebrate our marriage. However, we wanted to include in these invitations that we will accept only cash gifts, as actual presents would not be easy (or cost-efficient) to send home to Toronto. How can we ask for cash-gifts-only in a kind and polite way?
