Any other bridesmaids out there looking for fun and summery bridal shower ideas? Or, simply looking for budget-friendly decor items for your reception? Right now I am in the midst of planning a bridal shower this summer for my cousin and have been on the hunt for a few neat deals. One of my best finds? Ikea! Must-Have: Mason Jar Chandelier

I love, love, love, love, LOVE this idea. Who knew that hanging mason jars from the ceiling could have such a beautiful and illuminating effect on a venue? There’s just something so dreamy and almost vintage-like about these items. And, of course, for those of you that plan on hosting a tent celebration, wouldn’t this make a great addition to your decor? Would definitely add to the romantic atmosphere–especially during the evening time when all the candles are lit.

Each plank consists of 10 mason jars and cost approx. $100 each. Last we heard there were nine available via 100 Layer Cake’s marketplace.

Are pumpkins considered a fruit or a veggie? Well, whatever the answer, they’re great to use when in season and make for marvelous additions to your wedding. Aside from serving pumpkin pie, there are plenty of gorgeous ways to incorporate pumpkins into your wedding. For example, surrounding your venue with candle-inspired pumpkins gives your atmosphere a glowing warmth, carving your initials in elegant script make for lovely keepsakes and using pumpkins as a vase for beautiful floral arrangements are great fall-inspired centrepieces. Will you be using pumpkins at your autumnal wedding? Do tell!

Wow! Check out this amazing lantern display from Tavern on the Green in New York City. Our in-house multimedia producer Kyle (he edits all our videos and listens to our voices day in and day out) went to NYC last week to do a documentary with Ed Norton (yeah I know, what is his life!) for the NYC marathon. Anywho, while he was there, he also took a few snapshots of Tavern on the Green (this famous and luxurious restaurant smack dab in the middle of Central Park). As soon as I saw this gorge display I had to share. Love the blue twinkle lights and the hanging Chinese lanterns. It adds such pizzazz to any atmosphere and immediately sets the tone for a romantic evening.

Decor Dilemma

Q: Our reception is being held at a simple community centre instead of a fancy reception hall. We are looking for cheap ways to dress it up, so it will look different and a bit classier for our wedding day. One of the main issues is the wood panelling on the walls, from about waist height to the ground. Also, the bar is a cheap wood veneer, and we’d like some ideas for covering it or dressing it up. Do you have any suggestions?

A: There are a couple of cool ways to play with reception decor. The first is lighting: try playing with the lights in the hall itself. See if they’re on a dimmer. Dim lighting can be moody and disguise that wood panelling you’re trying to hide. If the lights aren’t on a dimmer, consider having candles both at the tables and at the bar. You can experiment with candles of different colours, sizes, styles, etc. The candlelight at the tables will also draw attention away from the walls. The second way to jazz up your reception decor is with linens. Linens can be used for covering tables and bars. This could be the ticket to covering up that cheap wooden bar you’re concerned about. Linens come in a variety of colours and patterns and, when placed on tables with centrepieces, really draw the eye to the centre of the room.
