The other day I received a phone call from a bride who was frantically looking for an image of this particular cake which we featured in our Spring + Summer 2010 issue–also our 25th anniversary issue! I had forgotten how pretty and romantic it looked until the request came through. This cake was truly a labour of love for us. We had gone back and forth between Diana from Papillon Cakes in regards to creating a cake that would commemorate our big 2-5. Initially, we wanted 25 layers–but that just wasn’t working for us. So as a shout out, we ended up going with a 5-tier confection with 5 different layers of flavours inside. I think it’s definitely a wonderful idea (if you have more than one tier) to ask your cake designer to incorporate various flavours–this also encourages guests to eat more cake–especially if you’ve got a variety of picky eaters.

Whoa mama! This is by far the insanest wedding-cake-turned-wedding-dress creation that I have seen. Created by Lukka Sigurdardottir, the pro has somehow managed to fit a gazillion of layers into the cake. Not that I’d recommend any bride to do this, but multitude of cake flavours from within does have a great appeal to me. What do you all think of this extreme idea? Hmm, I wonder how long this took to make.

Yesterday, our staff at Weddingbells received a nice surprise–delicious cakes. Of course, I was in on the surprise with Kristin from Cake or Death, who approached me a few weeks back about dropping off some cake samples at our office. Kristin was super-nice and sweet enough to bake us, not one, but three scrumptious confections in flavours of chocolate, pistachio and red velvet. As for the designs, it was a pleasant surprise to see them mimicked to look like an actual gift box from Chanel, Tiffany & Co. and Cartier.

Just a little info on Cake or Death, for those of you unfamiliar, they’re this talented cake company located in Mississauga. Their specialty? Alternative wedding cakes. I’m talking funky/whimsical custom sculpted cakes (click here to see their most recent work). But, if you’re truly a traditional bride, Cake or Death, hands down, is also a pro in creating elegant wedding cakes.

As for their flavours? Simply put, they’re delish. I asked a few of the staff to take a bite out of each. The winner? This should come as no surprise, Red Velvet won by a landslide. Don’t get me wrong, pistachio and chocolate were quite delightful, but there was something about that cream cheese frosting that really won us over. And, just for fun, here’s Jenn, Nicole and I hard at work.

I’m jealous of all the cities in America that are fortunate enough to have a mobile cupcake shop. I just recently read about this company called Cupcake Stop, which is a company that pretty much drives around New York City (just like a regular ice cream truck) selling deliciously fresh batches of cupcakes. Why can’t we have that? Even Sprinkles Cupcakes (a famous cupcakes shop in California is going mobile too!). But, if there’s anything I did gain by visiting Cupcake Stop’s website, it’s being inspired by their really cool and unique flavours. This one (pictured right) is creamy and delicious and I bet it tastes just like an oreo cookie–but softer. Here’s a few of their other unique flavours that you might consider for your own wedding day:

Triple chocolate–reminds me of a rich and gooey Rocky Road.

For a classic celebration I recommend their Banana Chocolate Chip.

Want something sweet and fresh? Chocolate Mint is your best bet.

Go really old school and indulge in a classic Peanut Butter and Jelly cupcake.

Hmm, not too sure what flavour this is, it’s called Psychedelic Tie Die. But, I’d imagine the taste to be as fruity and crazy as the title.
