Let Them Eat Cake

WBFeb10_canmore

Actually, this entry is about more than cake…it’s about FOOD!!

Rehearsal Dinner: This is going to be a really special dinner because it’s going to incorporate the foods of our two families. Gergely’s mom is an amazing baker and makes the most delicious Hungarian dessert: beigli. It’s a rolled pastry filled with sesame seeds and jam and according to Ger, his mom is the ONLY person who can make it right. I can’t wait to see all the goodies that she’ll whip up for us!

WBFeb10_pastryMy mom is, in my opinion, the best cook in the world! She, like me, loves food, and can make just about anything after tasting it just once. For the rehearsal dinner though, she’ll probably stick to the classic Chinese dishes: dumplings, stir-fried vermicelli, spring rolls, etc. Read the rest of this entry »

A Vintage Church

St. Michaels Anglican Church

St. Michaels Anglican Church

Since Ger and I weren’t going to be able to get married in the church that we normally attend in Edmonton, it was important that we find a church and a pastor in Canmore in which, and with whom, we both felt comfortable.

One of the wedding planners gave us a list of about 10 churches in the small town of Canmore, and we drove by or went into almost of all of them.  None of them had just what we were looking for…which, I suppose was no more than that special feeling of “Yes, this is where I want to get married.” Read the rest of this entry »

Real Wedding: Country Chic

wbdec09_1country_500x350

Okay, I’m putting it out there, I LOVE MY JOB! And one of the reasons that makes it so lovable is hearing how much of an inspiration we’ve been to brides. Ariana, a newlywed, had written me this heartwarming e-mail a few weeks back (after reading the wonderful message you MUST check out the cutest wedding EVER below!).

Hello Roseanne at Weddingbells!

Your magazine offered up so much inspiration as I began the process of  planning my “country-chic” wedding. After some time hoarding pictures on my desktop, I came to realize the style I liked when I opened the file – sweet, simple, whimsy but practical, effortlessly pretty,
natural, unique, vintagy, and of course prairie Canadian – very much  the things your magazine regularly features. I summed it up as Country Chic and stuck to that theme. I looked to you for help too, as I didn’t have a planner, day-of-planner, or really anyone to give me
some direction or advice! (I’m the first of my friends to marry…nerve-wracking!) It was definitely a lot of trial and error on my part.

My name is Ariana and my husband is Travis. Our wedding took place at his parents’ farm, outside of Edmonton, Alberta. The reception was down the gravel road, in a small community hall. It was important to us to have our wedding near the place we both grew up and
truly reflect the area…it meant a lot to our parents too. Also, from the get-go we knew our wedding needed to be on a budget…and I’m
happy to report it stayed that way! That meant a lot of DIY…many nights in front of the TV folding tissue paper, making table numbers,
printing signs, glueing flowers…all while ordering pizza and serving wine so I could get some help! Luckily I wanted the whole wedding to
have an unfussy, handmade feel that I think perfectly reflected the simply pretty western Canadian location.

Here’s photos from the day. Our photographers are a husband and wife team, called JDS Photography out of Edmonton, AB. They were fantastic!

Thank-you so much for you time.

Sincerely,

Ariana

Looking for Lipstick

Q: I’m looking for two things: a proven kissable lipstick (my groom doesn’t want to wear it!) and a method of finding a place in Edmonton that offers makeovers! (Other than phoning every place in the Yellow Pages.) Can you help?
