Bridal Beauty Pick of the Week

WHAT: Philip Kingsley Curl Activator, $30 (at Holt Renfrew).

WHY WE LOVE IT: I picked up this gem on my recent trip to London on the recommendation of my stylist and have been singing it’s praises ever since. Phillip Kingsley is a renown British trichological consultant and salon owner who’s product range is focused on the health and wellness of hair. Curl Activator gives curls definition, shine and major bounce. It’s a must to keep your hair looking fabulous in the summer months and frizz-free for a beach wedding.

My New Favourite: Destination Dress

Photography courtesy Mon Cheri Bridals.

Blame it on Toronto’s grey skies, but I’m currently dreaming about lush tropical beaches. Speaking of which, wouldn’t this wedding dress (by Destinations by Mon Cheri) be pretty for a Caribbean ceremony? Can’t you just feel the wind in your hair? The hand-painted skirt with illusion overlay is really different—daring, yet subtle, and perfectly suited to sunny skies, turquoise seas and exotic blooms.

Back from Paradise

I just got back from an amazing trip from the Grand Cayman Islands, where I stayed at the Ritz-Carlton and had the pleasure of enjoying a few treatments at Silver Rain–a La Prairie Spa. More to come on that note. In terms of the location in itself, I was moved by the gorgeousness of the Caribbean beach, sand and sun! Read the rest of this entry »

Destination Dream

Q: My fiancé and I have both always dreamed of a destination wedding. However, we’re concerned that some people (mostly family) will be upset. How can we word an email to everyone saying that this is what we have always wanted, and we understand that not everyone will be able to attend? We would like to send an email with a link to our wedding website that states this. Read the rest of this entry »

A Dress for a Destination “I Do”!

I don’t know about you, but I feel like Spring is just around the corner, and with many of my friends heading south for a bit of sun to escape these last few weeks of winter, I’ve been thinking about destination weddings.  Lo and behold, I’ve got the perfect destination wedding dress to share.

{Jenny Yoo Sasha Wedding Dress. Regularly $925 on sale for $300.}

This Size 12 Jenny Yoo Sasha wedding dress is perfect for a barefoot beach wedding. However, it’s being discontinued so now’s your chance to get this simple but stunning dress at a fabulous price.  One of our fave shops, Frocks, is selling this sample dress for just $300. With the money you’ll save, perhaps you can splurge on a special honeymoon experience! Are you planning a destination wedding? If so, what kind of dress are you planning to wear?

Until next week!

Wedding Belle: Waves of Love

Bride: Melissa Vanedenbroek
Wedding Date:
November 22, 2010
Wedding Location:
Mayan Riviera, Mexico
Wedding Style:
Dazzling spectators, Melissa floats down the aisle amidst a breathtaking backdrop of white sands and turquoise waters. Her stunning strapless gown cascaded into asymmetrical ruffles mid-waist, with airy organza fabric fluttering in the warm beach breeze. The diamond-encrusted bracelet sparkling on her wrist mirrored the diamond hairpin intertwined within her blond curls. She kept her makeup simple, focusing on a plum smoky eye and soft pink lips. Melissa’s wedding palette centred on the idea of white with a pop of colour. Corresponding to this theme the groomsmen dress entirely in crisp white linen, while the bridesmaids provide the “pop” in fiery red ruffle dresses. Melissa kept within the exotic flavor of her Mayan Riviera destination by accentuating her simple white rose bouquet with banana leaves. The shoreline appears tranquil as Melissa kicks aside her BCBG sparkle stilettos, revealing her perfect French manicured toes, and poses barefoot in the sand beside her handsome groom.
The Look:
Bridal gown: Cymbeline Paris (cymbeline.com) purchased at Becker’s Bridal (beckersbridals.com). Shoes: BCBGMAXAZRIA (bcbg.com). Jewellery: All from best friends and pervious brides! Bridesmaids dresses: Jacob (jacob.ca). Ceremony location: Riu Palace, Mayan Riviera, Mexico (riu.com).

Wedding Do: Have a Destination Wedding

Photography Miguel Jacob. First published in Weddingbells Fall & Winter 2009.

For some of you, saying “I do” far from home is your idea of the perfect celebration. Maybe it’s on the beach surrounded by close family and friends, at a castle in Scotland or privately in a California vineyard (like our Art Director Jenn!). Whatever that dream is, planning a destination wedding has all of the same ingredients as a wedding at home (flowers, favours, cake, the dress), yet you’ll definitely be connecting regularly with people at your location! Plus it can also be less expensive, especially if your guest list is small. Not sure where to start? Check out our Destination Weddings Guide and also don’t be afraid to talk to other destination wedding brides, who can give you the ins and outs of having a celebration away from home.

Shania Twain’s Wedding Photos

{Photography courtesy Robert Evans}

As you’ve probably heard by now, Canadian singer Shania Twain said “I do” to Frédéric Thiebaud in Puerto Rico on New Year’s Day. The couple exchanged vows in front of 40 of their closest friends and family. Shania wore a gown she found in a small boutique hear her home in Lausanne, Switzerland and paired the dress with Lorraine Schwartz jewelry and Calvin Klein shoes. Her nine-year-old son Eja, walked her down the aisle and shooting the big day was photographer Robert Evans, who also shot the weddings of Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston, as well as Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes.
