Shopping For A Destination Wedding Dress

Zinnia by Cristos—a Blush Bridal destination best-seller.

Hitting the road for your “I dos?” How romantic, modern and sexy. Whether you’re heading for Grand Cayman’s Seven Mile Beach or the California coast, the dress you choose for your destination wedding is going to require a little extra thought as it’s got to be one that’s a good traveller and look great on location. We asked Lorna Patterson, owner of Vancouver’s Blush Bridal and Special Occasions (Vera Wang, Ramona Keveza, Nicole Miller, Christos and Amsale are just a few of the heavenly designers they stock) for some intel on shopping for the perfect destination dress. Here are her six expert tips.

1. Go for comfort. Choose a natural fabric as it breathes and will keep you cool in a hot clime.

2. Check fabric movement. Light fabrics such as silk organza and silk chiffon will have some movement in a tropical breeze.

3. Consider colour. Strong sunlight will make white look whiter, so you may want to go ivory for a softer more ethereal look.

4. Think transportation. You want to carry your dress on the plane, not pack in your luggage. Make sure the fabric and style will travel well and you call ahead to let your airline know of your delicate carry on.

5. Go short. A sexy mini looks amazing on location. Also consider tea length for a short but not-so-revealing option.

6. Don’t shy away from formality. Just because you’re hitting the beach doesn’t mean your dress has to be breezy and boho. You can still choose a more structured formal style if that’s what you want, but designs in lighter fabrics (silk tulle, silk organza or silk chiffon), which will work better in the heat.

Beach Wedding Ideas

Planning a destination wedding in a tropical locale? We’ve gathered together some of our favourite beachy ideas that will complement the stunning backdrop of sun, sand and surf at your venue. Let the sea inspire your decor with faux starfish chair ornaments and an aisle made from locally-sourced wood. Opt for a bouquet of tropical blooms and a choose a simple cake accented with a unique cake topper brought from home. As far as a gown goes you’ll want something flowing and comfortable that can take the heat. Click the links below to for more info on these inspiring beach wedding elements.

Destination Wedding & Honeymoon Inspiration: Paradise Island, Bahamas

Last week, I experienced a delicious taste of the tropics with a four-day jaunt to Bahamas, specifically Paradise Island where I stayed at two very different, but equally amazing properties: One&Only Ocean Club and Atlantis. The former is quiet and boutique; the latter, a sprawling 500-acre Caribbean wonderland. Because there I have so much to share about each property, I’m going to need two posts to do it. Today, it’s all about Ocean Club. Read the rest of this entry »

Custom Totes For Out-of-Town Guests

For those of you with family and friends coming from afar, or for those of you planning a destination wedding, listen up! The best way to really thank your guests for traveling (aside from literally thanking them) is to have a custom tote bag waiting for them in their hotel room. Last year, I went to Minnesota for a wedding, and after a long trip, it was nice to see a little prezzie waiting for us in our suite. What did it include? Read the rest of this entry »

My New Favourite: Destination Dress

Photography courtesy Mon Cheri Bridals.

Blame it on Toronto’s grey skies, but I’m currently dreaming about lush tropical beaches. Speaking of which, wouldn’t this wedding dress (by Destinations by Mon Cheri) be pretty for a Caribbean ceremony? Can’t you just feel the wind in your hair? The hand-painted skirt with illusion overlay is really different—daring, yet subtle, and perfectly suited to sunny skies, turquoise seas and exotic blooms.
