Going to the Chapel and We’re Gonna Get Married

{Proof that we were destined to be married.}

*We’re not really getting married in a chapel; I just really like that song. I was actually singing it after we met with the priest…hehe*

It was important for both me and Mark to be wed in a church so what better a church than the one that plays a big part in both of our lives? St. Edwards Roman Catholic Church is not only the church that my family has been attending masses at all my life, but it is also where Mark attended elementary school. Can you believe that Mark and I actually had our first communion’s together and had no clue? It’s true! A few years ago, I was flipping through Mark’s childhood photo albums and when I got to the photos of his first communion, there was something strangely familiar with the photo. I visually scanned the photo and sure enough, I found my young self in the very same picture! Many years since that photo, Mark will once again be in a white tuxedo and I will once again be in a white dress and veil; walking down the very aisle that has been the central point of my day dreams since I was a little girl. The Backup Plans’ Call to Action

Through talking to many brides post-wedding, it really hit me how important it is, no matter how big or small the task, to have a backup plan.  I’ve heard countless times that something will undoubtedly go wrong, no matter how much attention to detail is paid—but I also know that whatever happens, we’ll still end up laughing about it (eventually!), and it’ll make for a great story. Hopefully!

I didn’t realize that the idea would be put to the test so soon: since the last time I wrote, the retailer of my unfinished dress went out of business; the veil I’d ordered (that looked so lovely on the internet) arrived—stiff, cheap-looking and larger than life; all my bridesmaids dropped out of the wedding party, along with our reception MC, and we realized our reception tables were smaller than anticipated—leaving us 12 centrepieces short! So, what did we do? Started working on Plan B!

The Dress

It’s not often I’ll consider myself lucky to public transit every day, but in this instance, it really worked in my favour. My route home from work includes a trip past the store where I’d bought my dress—which now has “For Lease” signs all over it. David and I had been watching an awful lot of Say Yes to the Dress recently (don’t tell anyone!), and I’d been questioning my dress more and more—it was cheap, it was off the rack, and it was grubby from handling and missing a significant amount of beading. He told me he wanted me to really love my dress, “like they do on the show!” and that I should take this opportunity to go look at some other ones. So I humoured him. And found my dream dress! It’s infinitely more beautiful, more flattering, and completely different from anything I would’ve imagined picking—but I am in LOVE with it. And I even got $100 off because the saleslady liked me! DIY Wedding Dos and Don’ts

{Photography courtesy Milkpod Studios.}

To DIY or not to DIY. That is the question, isn’t it? Once a bride gets into DIY mode, it can be quite a high. It’s easy to think, “Hey, why don’t I just do EVERYTHING myself!” However before you take up permanent residents at your local Michaels, it’s important to consider a few questions:

Can and should everything be a DIY project for a wedding?  If your reasons for DIY-ing are monetary—is DIY-ing always cheaper? Read the rest of this entry »

Unique Floral Centrepieces

I enjoy seeing weddings that really push the envelope–especially when it comes to centrepieces. What do you think of these ideas from Rountree Flowers? Love or hate? I, personally, love them. They still have an air of elegance about them, yet they’re quite different and distinct. What are you doing for your centrepieces? Are you using flowers, candles, or taking a non-traditional route?

Roses are Red, Violets are Blue, Canola is Yellow and Eco-friendly too

WBMar10_carrie-gergly

I love flowers. This is why it was a bit sad to have to give up the beautiful orchids flown in from Singapore, and the fleshy tulips from Holland, because of course, it wouldn’t be environmentally friendly to have to ship in my flowers across multiple oceans.

So I had to look around for flowers in the famous flower-producing capital of the world: Alberta…in September. Read the rest of this entry »

The Wonderful Wedding Show & a Tribute

WBFeb10_flowers

Centrepiece #1

What is more exciting and fun than meeting your girlfriends to go shopping? Meeting your girlfriends to go shopping for your wedding! Winnipeg’s Wonderful Wedding Show was held January 16 and 17 where wedding products and service vendors from all over Winnipeg and surrounding areas came together under one roof to provide brides and grooms a one-stop shop for all their wedding needs. Where do I look first?? There’s so much to see!! The day we went, our main goal was to check out what was available for the groomsmen’s tuxedos, gather some decoration inspiration and scope out some florists. The guys’ searching started and ended about as quickly as the flavour lasts in a gumball—not very long. Their only dilemma: bow ties or regular ties. I’m not sure how serious they were about the bow ties (I’d prefer regular ties) although knowing what a lively bunch the guys are, I wouldn’t be too surprised if they showed up in T-shirts with a tuxedo design and top hats. Ha ha!

The Wonderful Wedding Show was a great experience and so much fun. But now I need help!! Do I nix my first centrepiece idea with ideas I got from the show or do I keep my original idea? Which one do you like?

The Numbers Game

wbjan10_number_350x500I’ve seen and heard tons of great alternatives to table number cards (i.e., using movie titles, road names, pictures and so forth in lieu of numbers). But if you want to keep it simple and basic, I suggest a cute and chic sign like this hand painted wooden wedding reception table number from Funkifolkart. Read the rest of this entry »

The Best Reason for a Winter Wedding…

WBJan10_christmasThe dramatic beauty of amaryllis is reason enough. Their blooms are the size of grapefruit, they come in whites, reds, burgundy’s, corals, pinks and two-tone reds. And although they look like a lily they have no fragrance – so you can use them in everything without worrying about allergy sufferers. Read the rest of this entry »
