January is our favourite time of year—it’s wedding season! Or rather wedding planning season. At Weddingbells, it’s one of our busiest months. Our Spring & Summer 2012 issue landed on newsstands last month and we’re currently in the final stages of production on a new special edition, Weddingbells Weddings, which goes on sale February 20. Current Obsession: Sculpted Cakes

What’s not to love about this cake from Roxycakes? Everything from the cupcake down to the bundt cake is sculpted to look like the real deal. Here’s what Roxy had to say on the confection:

Really: sculpted cakes! A sculpted cake that looks like traditional cakes. Every single element of this cake is sculpted: the nuts, the graham cracker crumbs, the coconut, the cherry, the strawberries, the slices – all sculpted to look like the real deal. It’s my ode to traditional cake – a reminder of how much cakes have progressed over the years. Or perhaps it’s just my imagination running amok! Whatever it is, I just love it, and hope you will too!

Opting for a sculpted wedding cake is one way to personalize your celebration and really show off your passion/love for other things. Thanks for the idea Roxy!

A Weddingbells Shower

While Kate and William were announcing their engagement yesterday, we ourselves were in the midst of our own celebration–throwing a surprise soiree for our art director Jenn, who’s tying the knot in Sonoma Valley next Tuesday. Unbeknownst to Jenn, we spent the last few weeks organizing sweets, pretty stationery, gorgeous florals and delicious food. The result? A stunning party that literally wowed, not only our guest of honour, but all the invitees as well. In keeping with her peachy/grey-meets-shabby-chic-meets-elegance wedding theme, we asked our vendors to create something that would be just as fabulous and pretty, and boy did they not disappoint.

Our floral pro, Yvonne from Pistil Flowers created cute mini and lush arrangements that were comprised of Dusty Millers and other peachy posies.

Our stationery extraordinaire Deb from Palettera went above and beyond with her cute and whimsy signs, my personal fave was the “Keep Calm and Have a Cupcake” piece. The finger food from Daniel et Daniel was gone in no time.

But the icing on the cake for me (and everyone else) was the delicious treats that Rosa from It’s My Cake created. Desserts ranged the gamut from a delicious two-tier confection (one tier vanilla the other red velvet) to sugar cookies filled with dulce de leche filling to chocolate/vanilla cupcakes and finally to the crowd’s favourite–chocolate covered chocolate cake pops (these were to die for!).

Found this creative design off of Its My Cake, a talented wedding cake shop located here in Toronto. Love how they took such a simple concept and transformed it into an elegant design. After all the pie that I ate over Thanksgiving weekend I thought I’d be done with sweets for awhile. But, looking at these romantic cakes by Jessica Berard Cake has me craving for more. Located in Montreal, Jessica has a knack for designing some of the most gorgeous and luxurious confections without going too over-the-top. And, for those of you looking for a more whimsical design, Jessica is also quite talented when it comes to creating fun and quirky sculpted cakes, which can be seen here.

Canada AM Day 4 & 5: Food & Merging Cultural Ideas

Today marked day five A World of Weddings week on Canada AM. Over the past week I presented ideas for a multicultural celebrations, touching on everything from traditions, to fashion, gifts, food and inspiring ideas. Yesterday our focus was food and choosing dishes for your celebration that reflected your culture. Here are a few things we highlighted:

• Chinese: Roast suckling pig served with jellyfish and seaweed; sweet lotus buns.

• Indian: Vegetarian curries and chutneys served with rice and naan bread.

• Russian: Borscht soup, potato pancakes topped with smoked salmon and caviar.

• Greek: Spanokopita, sourdough coin bread, bittersweet Jordan “Koufeta” candied almonds.

A HUGE thank you to Toronto’s Daniel et Daniel who provided all the wonderful food for us; Flour Studio for the sweet floral arrangements; and Weddingbells’ Contributing Editor Catherine Doherty for styling everything to look so fantastic! Today, for our final segment, I answered some viewer emails and also brought along a show and tell table highlighting ways that you can bring your culture into various wedding day elements. More thank yous to the following:
