Oh What a Cake!

Photography by Carlo Mendoza.

The other day I received a phone call from a bride who was frantically looking for an image of this particular cake which we featured in our Spring + Summer 2010 issue–also our 25th anniversary issue! Read the rest of this entry »

Happy Canada Day!

In honour of Canada’s birthday I thought I’d pay homage to this pretty Canadian-inspired wedding cake from Sweet Things. Here’s a brief description behind the makings of this confection:

The couple wanted to incorporate their different cultural background into the cake. The bride is from Hong Kong which is the flag design on the bottom tier. The groom is Portuguese and Korean which is the flags design on the next two tiers. And a gumpaste Canadian Flag on top. They also have a love for pandas which was the sugarpaste topper.

Completely love how this cake is such a great symbol of how Canada is a wonderful place filled with a multitude of cultures, er sans the pandas, but they’re cute too!

The Swoosh

Go ahead and order a plain fondant cake! The Swoosh will take care of the rest. :)

This Swoosh consists of mini and large pink cymbidium orchids with some white dendrobium blooms in-between for depth. Since orchids are the hardiest flowers out of water, they are the best choice if the cake is going to be on display for a long period of time or is in warmer weather.

The Swoosh also looks beautiful with roses, lisianthus, and lilies. These flowers however should be placed on the cake just before the guests arrive, so they look beautiful all night long.

I’ve got butterflies…

I was inspired by Jenn Sibranti’s (from Hostess with the Mostess) latest collaboration with Polka Dot Design on this cute butterfly stationery (pictured above). I love the colours and the design–so girly and modern. Found a few other details/ways to incorporate this fluttery bug into your wedding day via your bouquet, confection and favours. The cake especially (designed by LPK’s Culinary Groove in Toronto) is such a stunner.

Fun Dessert Tables

You know what your bridal shower or wedding needs? A fun dessert table like this gorgeous one from Shauna Younge Dessert Tables. I love her style–it’s fresh and simple. The pink set-up was done with a preppy-chic design in mind while the lavender creation simply oozes elegance and charm. Click through the little thumbnails below to see close-ups of all the fun treats! Enjoy.

current obsession: one layer cakes

I don’t know about you but I think a one-layered wedding cake can look just as elegant and timeless as a two or three-tier confection, don’t you agree? Especially if you’re having an intimate and small celebration, there’s no need to have all that cake go to waste (although knowing me, I’d probably eat more than a slice). I found this simply irresistible design from The Golden Girlz, whose cakes not only look good but taste good too! Bonus: for those of you that have opted to have a dessert bar or serve cupcakes in lieu of a wedding cake, having a small one layered sweet is a wonderful solution to those who still want to participate in the classic cake-cutting ceremony.

Eat What You Want Day

{image via Cocoa & Fig}

Today is National Eat What You Want Day. So in honour of that, I’m posting a bunch of fun and sugary treats that are yummerific. Definitely think one of these could find a home at your dessert table. Enjoy!

strawberry shortcake alternative

This is such a marvelous idea for those of you that LOVE strawberry shortcake (the cake not the character!). Spotted from Eat Drink Chic–the bride opted to serve fresh strawberries, warm scones, jam and cream in lieu of a traditional cake. Yummy.
