My Top 10 Reflections

The wedding was fabulous and I loved every moment of it.  Here is my advice to you.

1. Don’t plan on leaving any tasks for the day before or the day of the wedding.

New last minute things that you don’t even think of will pop up and you might not have time to do everything.  We forgot to buy markers for our “guest book”!  We had these really cool pages for the guests to fill out, but only about ¼ of the guests filled them out.

2. It is totally worth it.

All the planning, hard work and money that goes into the wedding is truly worth it. In the final stressful weeks of planning, I was questioning whether we should have just planned a casual or destination wedding…  However, I had no idea how special and meaningful it would be. I’m so glad “we” put in all the work (and by “we” really I mainly mean my Mom, there’s no way the wedding would have happened without all of her hard work.) Read the rest of this entry »

Photos By Wei Will Brighten Your Day

Finding our photographer was probably the easiest part of the wedding planning process.  I already had a fairly clear idea of how I wanted our pictures to turn out, so when I came across the Photobolic website, I knew right away it was the right fit.

Photobolic is an independent photography studio in Calgary run by Wei Quek: a young, energetic and extremely talented photographer. He takes organic, interesting and PRETTY photographs that you fall in love with like a great pair of shoes! His pictures tend to have an editorial feel to them—pictures that you can hang up on your wall like art. Read the rest of this entry »

Tiers of Joy

{Some of Charlie’s beautiful creations.}

It’s not a secret that one of my biggest passions in life is art in every form. So when it came to our wedding cake, it was only natural for me to want to design it. I had the craziest idea that I would make our wedding cake until Mark got concerned that I may be biting off more than I can chew. I tried to argue but when he said to let Charlie take care of it, I was sold on the idea.

Chef Charlie V., owner and head chef of Charlee’s Restaurant, is a close friend of ours for many years with Mark having gone to school with him since high school. We love his food and you can often find us dining and hanging out at his restaurant. What sold me on the idea of Charlie making our cake was the thought of just how much I LOVE his cupcakes! He makes the meanest, the moistest base and pairs it with a light, fluffy and not-too-sweet icing. Not only is he a whiz with food, he’s also hard working, easy to get along with and an all-together good guy. Read the rest of this entry »

Let’s Face the Music…and (TRY to) Dance

So far in my blogging journey, I’d like to think you’ve been able to get to know me pretty well. In that I’m terrified of the cold (yet having a wedding in the dead of winter), I’m a DIY enthusiast, willing to dump eggs all over my head, dress up as a medieval princess, an eternal optimist, proudly English, poor, and maybe slightly too much of a nerd.  (Nice to meet you!)  But aside from all that, one of the things I’m most passionate about in life is music.

We’re really trying to incorporate fun, personality, and things that really are meaningful for us into our wedding. Short of hiring a kitten-shaped tux and training our little cat on the concept of “straight line,” I think we’re doing quite well! Music is a big part of both our lives, so naturally this was an area in which we could have a little fun.

Our ceremony will be at David’s church. Traditionally Roman Catholic, there are certain restrictions on the sort of music that can be played. Let’s just say my dreams of walking down the aisle to the Star Trek: TNG theme have gone firmly out the window. Luckily, David plays in the church band with one of the city’s best local musicians, part of a duo who are kindly going to sing at the ceremony. He’s wonderfully talented, fun, and down to earth, and I can’t wait to hear them perform! Read the rest of this entry »

Something New and Something Blue…

I have two great things to blog about today! And who knew one could be so excited about two little things!

I really wanted a unique garter to wear for the wedding. The traditional white lace with blue trim was just not going to cut it for me. I checked in some stores in town but they all looked the same. So I turned to the world wide web for help. It didn’t take long! gartersbykristi.com turned out to be the perfect match for what I was looking for. She has an endless supply of sports themed garters, paired with a great variety of “classic” styles and other designs as well. I was able to find a garter that matched my wedding and it will really stand out with the flash of colour. Read the rest of this entry »

Getting That “Bridal Glow”

I’ve always had problem skin.  As long as I can remember, I’ve been plagued with every skin problem imaginable—acne, extreme dry skin and eczema have been my biggest problems. It got to the point when I had to quit past jobs because something at the workplace was causing my eczema to act up. Luckily, over the past few years working with my new dermatologist, I was able to get my skin to a manageable point and hadn’t had many flare ups of any of my skin issues…

Until 2 weeks ago. Read the rest of this entry »

Expecting the Unexpected

On top of the many obstacles that come up when planning a wedding, Bojan and I just discovered we are expecting another baby! It is such an exciting yet overwhelming time in our lives so I am glad we planned for a small backyard affair. Planning and organizing a full-blown wedding would be ridiculously stressful!

This past weekend we had a chance to make our wine selections for service at our reception and as gifts for our guests. The process was about 20 minutes in total and didn’t involve too much outside of the selections themselves but it’s one more thing off the list of things to do! We will be returning to the store in about five weeks’ time to see how our beverages turned out (although it’s too bad I won’t get to enjoy it until after the baby arrives!).

The biggest concern I have before the big day is what I will wear. I have been putting this on hold as I’m not sure how big I will be and what will be most flattering. At this point, my only option is going with something from a maternity store. I’ve searched within my city but nothing has quite done it for me.  So I’ve turned my search to the Internet. I haven’t narrowed down the choice completely but initially these three numbers spoke to me. Read the rest of this entry »

The Search for the Dress!

Maggie Sottero's "Capri Marie"

I’m writing this blog two days before my wedding and by the time you are reading it, I will be married! So exciting! Anyways, now I can finally tell you about my dress.

I thought I knew exactly what I wanted… I spent months looking at online listings on craigslist and kijiji for a used wedding dress. I have no problems wearing a used dress and I thought it would be a great way to keep the cost down. When I saw this dress, it was exactly what I’d been looking for.

I called the lady who was selling the “Capri Marie” and made an appointment to come see the dress. I put on the dress, and… it looked okay, but not at all how I expected. Since I had convinced myself for months that this is the dress that I wanted, I bought it. It was only

I am too short for this dress and it does not flatter me at all! I'm sure it would look great on the right person though!

$350 and I figured since it was a Maggie Sottero it would be easy to sell it again if I changed my mind. On the ride home, I kept worrying about how it looked on me. When I got home, I got my sister to take some pictures of me in the dress and then cried when I saw the pictures. It just wasn’t flattering on me at all! It looked great in the pictures, but awful on me. Read the rest of this entry »
