How they met: “We met in the fall of 1994. Dan had returned from a year of travelling around the world and ended up walking the halls of my high school. We were both in grade 10,” explains Catherine. “High school finished and we went our separate ways until December 2008. Our paths crossed, or as Dan would say – the stars aligned. We started off exchanging emails, each one getting longer and longer until we decided that we should probably actually talk to one another. Our first phone conversation was after New Year’s day, 2009. The call came in around 2 am and we talked for eight hours straight! I knew from that first conversation that this was it; I had finally met the man I would marry. Our first date was a few days after the first conversation and it lasted about 10 hours. Spending crazy amounts of time together never felt like enough. I knew that this would be the one person that I would spend the rest of my life with.”

Engagement story: “It was Easter Sunday 2011. I had grown up with Easter egg hunts every year, so when Dan and I moved in together we continued the tradition,” Catherine recalls. “I had gone into the dining room to retrieve a sweater and heard Dan’s voice from the couch. It surprised me out of my skin! He was sitting in our living room indicating toward the love seat opposite the couch he was on. I looked at where he was staring and noticed a shimmering pink egg – the one that eluded me all day! I picked it up and saw that there was a hole in the side and tucked under the chocolate was my grandmother’s ring. As I removed it Dan got down on one knee and told me that I was his best friend, how much he loved me, how he wanted to spend the rest of his life laughing with me and loving me. Then he asked if I would marry him. We were engaged on April 24, 2011. It would have been my maternal grandparents 67th wedding anniversary, which is significant because Dan proposed with my grandmother’s ring.”
