Pick a Colour

wbsept09_damaskFirst of all let me introduce myself—I am Laura from Laura K Design and I am thrilled to be a guest blogger for Weddingbells. I look forward to sharing my ideas, designs and experiences with you over the next few months.

As my first post I want to start off talking about Colour. Colour has always been key element in my designs. I have a tendency to create invitations with colour that fills the entire page (or most of it) and this has become my signature style. Fortunately for me there are many people who share my love and aren’t afraid to make a bold statement!

The colours for your invitations—and entire wedding for that matter—can be inspired by the season, the venue, a fabric or just a colour you love!

Recently I have been seeing couples thinking outside of the box when it comes to colour and I couldn’t be happier. Here are a few of the trends I am noticing.

A bronze and deep red combination is one of my favourites for this fall.  The colours are rich and look gorgeous on the cream linen paper like the one used for this invitation.

For the past few years many invitations were a combination of brown and pink, brown and green and brown and blue. That trend seems to have died down somewhat (although not completely) and now I am happy to say that charcoal grey and navy are the new brown! These two colours work amazingly well with a wide selection of colours. Modern and bold, this invitation in charcoal grey and orange made the statement my clients were looking for.

Another colour that is hugely popular is purple—in just about any shade. wbsept09_greyinvite

A damask design works beautifully in a purple and gold combination and it also looks stunning in yellow and gold and turquoise and grey.

My biggest pieces of advice in selecting your invitation is to be creative and don’t be afraid to use colour. Whatever you do make sure that your wedding reflects who you and your fiancé are as a couple… and remember a wedding doesn’t have to be white to be beautiful.
