Andrea and I are so excited to have the opportunity to share some thoughts, ideas and deals to help smart and savvy brides such as yourself stretch your wedding dollars further. We both managed to plan our own dream weddings balancing where to save and, perhaps more importantly, where to splurge!
Over the next few months, we’ll be sharing ideas to help you spend wisely while planning the wedding of your dreams. Stay tuned for splurge vs. steal comparisons, useful tips and tons of inspiring ideas. We’re passionate about connecting local brides past and present to help Canadians create fabulous weddings. Feel free to share how you plan to have your cake and eat it too!

Let’s get started with two quick tips:

1. Music. Although a DJ is often great at reading the crowd and keeping everyone on the dance floor, consider using your Ipod to make a playlist—for a portion, or all of the evening. For some extra fun, include your friends and family by asking them to suggest the songs guaranteed to get them dancing! Andrea’s hubby is a real music fiend, so he put together a personalized playlist for their cocktail reception that worked out beautifully.

If you’ve got your heart set on live music, such as a string quartet or jazz band, put up a sign at your local university’s faculty of music. Often, these groups are looking for some extra spending money and a chance to perform in public. I used to play in an amateur string quartet and we loved to play weddings!

2. Photos. Hiring a professional photographer is not cheap, but we don’t recommend scrimping on this aspect of your wedding. Photos are an important part of the big day and one of the only lasting visuals you will have for years to come. One way to save some money is to look for a photographer who is willing to provide you with your digital negatives. This allows you to print your own photos for wedding albums or to send to family and friends. You control the quality, quantity and cost of various prints at a huge savings. Christina Gapic captured some beautiful pictures at our wedding, plus provided all the files we needed to create our own album.

  • I believe that receiving high resolution files is important because it gives couples peace of mind that they will always have access to their images, but I do have a few extra tips…

    1. Make copies of your images, discs do not last forever and making copies every few years should guarantee that they last as long as possible.

    2. Store your disc in proper packaging to keep it safe. Put your disc in a case and then in a box or envelope and keep it somewhere temperature controlled.

    3. Make sure that you print your images! Prints will always last longer than a CD, so if you want to make sure you will have your images for a lifetime, have them printed and stored in an archival album or box.

    4. Look into ordering the best quality prints possible, many chain print shops don’t offer the best quality for your dollar. Look for local professional grade labs to print your once in a lifetime memories, or speak to your photographer about print services. Most photographers should have access to a pro lab.
