Delightful Dahlias

The other week I blogged about Glamelia’s and how pretty they were. Hoping to get more info on the process (it does take quite a bit of time to construct something so delicate and gorgeous) I made a quick trip to visit Jenn, a florist at Flour Studio. She had told me that Glamelia’s were very pretty, but agreed they would be delicate and need some major TLC during your wedding day. They could also be a tad pricier–depending on size.
As an alternative, Jenn suggested dinner plate dahlias (these are single stemmed florals which can range up to 30cm in diameter–hence the dinner plate term). Although, they can be quite delicate, Jenn suggested getting a few extra dahlias to keep in water (they last longer in the water–almost up to 4 days), that way the instance your dinner plate dahlia starts to wilt (about 2 to 3 hours without water) you can whip a new one right out. The best part? Jenn mentioned that four to five dinner plate dahlias (surrounded with a bit of greenery and a cute ribbon) are cost effective and could cost half as much as one Glamelia.
Whichever arrangement you choose–dinner plate dahlias or Glamelia’s–Jenn suggests choosing darker shades like red and orange as the lighter hues could wilt faster–making them more noticeable in your wedding photos.

Not all florists are created equal!!! In Winnipeg I have had quite a time of finding a reasonable florist since our budget is small. I tried the grocery chains but decided on a wonderful florist Lakewood Florist on St Anne’s road. The difference fo me was that the guy I spoke to could visualize what I wanted and put together a sample which fit the bill perfectly. I was very impressed with this man whose name is Dan and I wanted to tell other brides out there that if what you want is not the traditional it pays to go somewhere where the person understand your artistic vision and can take the time to listen to you. It makes all the difference
