The Rise of the French Macaron
Yesterday The Toronto Star published a great article on Toronto’s trendiest cookie in town–the French macaron. Indeed it has been trendy, but not for many Parisians as it is their quintessential French sweet. If you ever head to Paris, I’m told Laduree is macaron mecca. And, if you’ve never tried one before, the best way I can describe this petite treat is that it has a light meringue-ish texture with sweet filling in the middle. I love the idea of seeing them used as favours (you can even have your cake designer customize them with your monogram) and as cake towers. However, if you are truly looking for a really unique way to showcase these decadent goodies, take a look at this white gorgeous window display by Bergdorf Goodman in December of 2008 in NYC. The macaron design is quite different, you can almost compare it to a topiary or lampshade. So pretty!

I discovered Laduree last May while walking along Champs Elysses. I noticed every fashionable woman was carrying a pretty green bag and I didn’t care what was in them i just had to have one. To my surprise, as I followed a few people into the opulent store, these tasty little pieces of heaven greeted me.
I have been in love ever since.
This January I was in Europe again and made it my quest to visit every single Laduree. 1 in London and 4 in Paris. I even have the cook book.
I wish they would come to Canada.
It’s so good to see that macarons are making their way to Canada! I was in Paris last may and they are simply to die for! Indeed, Laduree is a macaron mecca but you can get them at every bakery on every dreamy, cobblestone street in Le Gay Paris.
Perhaps soon macaron shops will be ousting the profusion of cupcake shops popping up everywhere in Edmonton. We can only hope.
That’s quite possibly the most gorgeous window display I’ve ever seen!
