The Best Reason for a Winter Wedding…

WBJan10_christmasThe dramatic beauty of amaryllis is reason enough. Their blooms are the size of grapefruit, they come in whites, reds, burgundy’s, corals, pinks and two-tone reds. And although they look like a lily they have no fragrance – so you can use them in everything without worrying about allergy sufferers.

My Christmas bride was happy to take advantage of their availability! Her centrepieces were a mass of red amaryllis blooms, with chunky pine cones, berries and beautiful B.C. and incense cedar. She chose white blooms for the bouquets, with a touch of cedar… which looked fantastic on the bridesmaids red dresses!WBJan10-flowers

A tid bit of knowledge for all the flower lovers out there – amaryllis are hollow, like a straw. So they are not easy to put into floral foam, and if you plan to, make a hole first with a marker, so not to crush the stem. Because they are hollow, they also drink a lot of water, so keep the vessel full. :)  And, like lilies, they have pollen, so if you are using them for wedding bouquets, make sure all the pollen is pulled off, even on newly opened blooms that may open during the wedding day. But don’t worry pollen does not stain until it is mature so you have time to get it off of a fresh flower before it stains.

We had the choice of going with Christmassy reds for our winter wedding or silvers and blues, and with all the snow (and it being not TOO close to Christmas), we went with the latter – finding flowers that will withstand the crazy temperatures here in December is a little bit of a challenge, but I’m loving all the wintery things you can do to make a winter wedding really sparkle :)
