Purple 101

The most logical thing to do when working with colour is to try and match colours perfectly. For example, tie in the exact hue of the girls violet dresses into the flowers, dresses, invitations, and linens. However, it will become apparent very quickly that your dressmakers “violet” is very different then your stationers “violet”! The easy solution to this problem is to widen your theme to the base colour itself—in this case, purple.
When planning the flowers, research the purple flowers available during your wedding season. You can always fall back on roses, freesia, carnations (purple carns are actually quite pretty), and orchids that are available all year. If your bridesmaids are wearing dark purple dresses, consider giving them a bouquet of light purple flowers, or visa versa.
If you love purple, but want to make it pop, consider adding dark red to your colour scheme. Since purple itself is made from red and blue, it makes sense that it would co-ordinate with them. As seen in the picture of this table setting, the burgundy roses give all the shades of purple a dark and elegant tone.
Push your colour scheme limits and think outside the box—or inside the colour wheel. ☺
