After the Wedding

Wow, it’s hard to believe it has been four weeks and a day since the wedding. I’m an old married guy now. Where to start? First of all, let me thank Weddingbells for this great opportunity. This has been a joy and has actually helped me keep perspective along the wedding planning journey, which I am now writing a screenplay about—too many juicy things to not write down.

May Day

Perfect timing. We are officially five days away now and I have run out of topics to complain—I mean—blog about. All the major elements are accounted for, as far as I know. We still have to procure our marriage licence tomorrow, which is waiting for us in the office of Vital Statistics in downtown Vancouver. I’m hoping that isn’t too much of a gong show.

Brandy is on the couch organizing our seating chart and the little cards that go on the plates so each person knows where to park. She’s miserable, nursing a cold. I’m not feeling any symptoms yet, so that means I’ll probably start heading downhill mid-week and be full-on sniffles for the big day.

Days Away

We are officially 12 days away and the butterflies are bouncing all around my stomach. The thought of my girl in her gown with a big smile on her face sends me soaring. It’s like I see everything in slow motion. All the friends and family coming together—what a great idea this marriage thing is.

I plan to breathe deep and be present and open myself and mean what I say. I’m really excited to do this. There’s gonna be lots of love going around.

And Brandy and I have realized we’re going to be broke as soon as it’s over. Anxiety aside, there’s something fun about that—starting our lives together with nothing but each other. It’ll make us appreciate everything we build.

Honeymoon Escape

Yay honeymoon! Let’s face it—the word is synonymous with sex, and lots of it, (sorry Mom). So what’s not to get excited about? This may be the one time in your life you’re encouraged by everyone to really whoop it up.

You may be looking at your calendars and wondering why we’re booking this just two and a half weeks from our big day. It is because we are both dirty actors who are in the business of booking jobs (or trying to) that have unset schedules.

But now that pilot season is over and we have both come up empty, we are free to lock something down. Now we just have to decide where to go. Everybody has a different way of approaching this so I’ll just tell you what ours is and you can feel free to shoot me down in the “comment” section.

Let there be lies!

I’ve heard from those in the know, (my married friends) that we should avoid the “W” word when arranging certain things. This became glaringly obvious yesterday when my fiancée attempted to align our flowers for our—shhh!—wedding.

She went to two stores, (due to their gouging, I won’t be able to afford a libel lawsuit, so I guess I can’t mention their names, though I’d certainly like to). She asked them the same questions and received the same answers, so I assume this is standard industry practice.

She asked for the price of Calla Lilies.

“Four dollars each.”

The Tux

Yeah right. I am not one to write a How-To for weddings. When this is over, I’m only looking back in photo albums. When I began this blog for our gracious host, I knew it was going to be more of a vent for me to blow through than an advice machine. But it’s cool. It’s like, “Let’s go on an adventure with the dumb actor, and we’ll laugh and cry and be free spirits.” Maybe. It’s hard to be a free spirit when you leave your tuxedo rental to the last, let’s see, 33 days. Wow.

Food and Drink

The wedding planning topic that currently has us scratching our heads: food and drink.

Food is pretty straightforward. There’s going to be a lot, and it’s going to be expensive. We’re doing our ceremony and reception at the same place—ceremony at 3:00 p.m., reception at 6:00 p.m. We hope this leaves us enough time for pictures elsewhere and maybe the receiving line thing —which I don’t like. I’d rather everybody just line up and stick their hands out and Brandy and I could run by and give ’em all high fives. Fun!

Let Them Eat Cake!

"All right. Who’s a cake-eater?" I bet you all have your hands up.
Funny enough, I’m actually a pie guy. Apple, Pumpkin, Pecan, Lemon, Banana Cream—oh heck yeah! But weddings are about cakes and there are certainly some funky creations out there.

We thought about trying to save cash by going with cupcakes—cute, no knife required, simple—but at $2.50 – $3 each, times 200 guests, that’s $500 to $600! We found we can rock a pretty cool cake for that. And wedding cakes are beautiful. Yikes. Did I just write “cute” and “beautiful” in the same paragraph? Excuse me, I need to go rattle off twenty push-ups…All right, I’m back. Cool, feeling manly. Let’s wedding plan!
