Winter Wonderland
We are getting married on December 4, 2010 in Winnipeg—probably the coldest part of Canada, at one of the coldest times of the year! We’re hopefully going to use the season to our advantage and have a white, blue and silver winter wonderland type theme. We’re getting married in our church, followed by a sit-down dinner and dance (well, hopefully the latter part will be standing) at a beautiful dance studio all decked out in fairy lights, winter branches and maybe the odd Christmas tree. I come from England, but have lived here for several years now. We don’t have an enormous budget, as we’re paying for the wedding ourselves, and are definitely not having a social. So I think it’ll be a fun process with lots of DIY projects and hopefully not too many disasters!
I’m definitely not a bridezilla. I’ve got a great sense of humour and I’ll write about things that will entertain (and hopefully help) other brides-to-be. Family drama? Check! Frostbite? Check! Trying to entertain your fiancé’s extended French-speaking family with a rich French vocabulary consisting of “bonjour,” and “où est la bibliothèque”? Check!
I’m really excited about planning the whole thing and I’d love to be able to share my progress and stories with the other wedding belles out there!

Congrats it looks like you made it through but I’m sorry it’ll probaby be as far as you get clearly the Wedding Bells staff have already picked their winner (Mai) as they delete anything negative directed at her immediately while they let your competition’s nasty comments stay up for days. They doctor Mai’s comments too so she doesn’t look bad and make sure she is always in the lead. Its a fix and i’m sad for you. But best of luck in your wedding it sounds lovely
I think the Wedding Bells staff should take a note of what you said about the contest making you stressed and anxious; I have a friend in this competition who is having a VERY tough time with the rapid percentage changes, the negative comments, and the worry about what’s going to happen – I think a month was totally too long to draw out the tension and really brought out some negative things, when in the end all that really is going to count is how many people click a mouse for a certain girl. I feel sorrry for everyone in this contest and I sincerly hope the staff don’t do this to you all in the following round. I agree with a lot of the comments about it being unfair and its not fair for some of you who I know work 2 jobs, don’t have any time on their hands to see their fiance let alone spend a bunch of time voting, when others can sit around making as many accounts as they want and voting for themselves. I’m not accusing anyone of this but a lot of peoples suspicions have been raised in general and its totally a possibility and i definitely see how it could make anyone in this competition very stressed out. I’m sorry you had to go through this and I wish you all the best once this is all over and you can focus on planning your wedding!!
Well it looks like your’e gonna make it through this round, best of luck
Wooooooooooooooo Em you’re totally gonna win this round!! You HAVE to win the whole thing, you’ve been through so much and you deserve it more than ANYBODY!!!
Thanks Katherine, and Judith I’m glad you had such a great experience with Pink Elephant!! I’m hoping to see some of the other shots we took at some point too, it was great working with them! :)
I just wanted to express my thanks to all of you for continuing to vote for me and for putting me in the position I am right now. I can’t even express how much it means to me to have so much support from not only friends and family but also everyone else who I’ve never even met before! I’m very humbled and touched by all your support and I just wanted to take this opportunity (at this very appropriate time of year!) to let you all know how much I appreciate it.
Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving :)
I’m watching this contest progress and I’m kinda glad its coming to a close because I’ve seen an awful lot of accusations of cheating, dishonesty, slander and other things thrown at some of these girls and I feel for those who’ve been hit by the jealousy of others or people who have nothing better to do than start gossip and rumours. I see you have lots of support and I hope you have a wonderful wedding!
Sorry I mean to say “It’s funny to read what I wrote years back..” not “…what YOU wrote..”
:)
Emily,
I Loved Pink Elephant – I left that studio happy and high as a kite! I think they’re the one and their daughter is the sweetest thing..
Thanks for the encouragement about moving to wordpress! I went from the Live Spaces (microsoft) to Google sites and now onto WordPress.. from the looks of it I’ll quite enjoy it. It is funny to read what you wrote years back.. haha!
Best of luck..we have one more week! Ah!
Happy Thanksgiving!
- Judith

Hi Emily.
thank you so much for the post! sounds like we both have a lot in common! I think your wedding sounds so beautiful and perfect! You have had my vote from the start, and I will continue to vote for you!
I have been to Winnipeg in the winter…. haha you are a brave women!
Hi Emily,
I really hope you win, I am looking forward to reading your blog. We are planning to get married February 5, 2011, we are also thinking of having a winter wonderland theme – white, blue and silver. My family is french Canadian and my poor fiance’s french is pretty limited.
Good luck!
Good luck in your upcoming wedding! I look forward to hearing from your news! My wedding is February 20 2010, and I absolutly love winter! So I hope you win :-)
Hi everyone, thank you so much for the encouragement, I hate to see negativaty flying around and I’m glad it’s been addressed – Sarah, Pat, Bianca, Rita and everyone else who’s commented, thank you so much :)
I just had to have a look after the WeddingBells staff response at some of the other entries and wow these two have certainly provoked discussion!!!!!!!! I hope you win Emily, clearly you’ve created some buzz and I’m sure it’s for very good reasons (seeing all the positive comments on here) and not just the fact that the other entry clearly isn’t from a bride that people can relate to. I think you seem very sweet, relatable, intriguing and your wedding sounds different from all the summer weddings we read about and very beautiful and I think deciding to have it in such a harsh climate (plus yuo seeming far more gracious than some other entries plus you made me laugh!!!!) definately deserves the win IMO!!!!!
Hello Readers,
There have been a lot of negative comments in regards to this blog (and others) and we would like to remind all of you that personal attacks are NOT tolerated. To this end, some comments have been edited and/or removed. In future please think twice before adding comments which are not in keeping with the friendly environment we strive to create.
We’d like to thank you for your continued interest in this competition and to encourage you to keep voting for your favourite bloggers. Let your votes do the talking!
Sincerely,
Stephanie Gray, Online Editor
Agreed. Please don’t let any of the negativity circling around get to you, your going to have a beautiful wedding and I hope you get through because i’m looking forward to reading all about it!
I hope all of these weirdo comments haven’t soured you on wanting to write this blog! Wow I spent like 10 minutes reading all of this drama on the two blogs, I can’t believe it!!
Good luck Emily, your wedding sounds beautiful, I hope all of this negativity doesn’t bring you down!
I’m staying out of the “nasty comment” debate, just want to show my support for this entry! Wishing you all the best in the contest and in your marriage!!!
HI Emily
I think you are a sweetheart and I look forward to hearing more about your wedding plans. Because of the huge controversy going on on the other blog I have taken the time to vote for both of you (on different days) because I think both of you deserve an equal chance to win, and I refuse to take sides.
Best of luck. I’m sure you will make a beautiful bride! I hope your day is as beautiful as you are and that all your dreams come true.
kwt – thanks for the kind comments :) I really hope to post some photos too!
Above ^ I have been reading the activity on the other post and I was SHOCKED to see some of the things that’ve been written! I can guarantee that none of the nasty comments are from anybody I know; a friend of mine under the “Oh really” alias actually stepped in and advocated for people on both sides to stop being nasty! I very much appreciate people’s votes but I would never encourage anyone to bring someone else down. Honestly, I was totally shocked at some of the things that were written, and something I’ve learned from my fiance (a football coach) is that you don’t rise any higher by taking other people down.
Emily, good luck from another Winnipegger! I’m not a bride but your theme sounds great and I was really drawn in by the whole Winter Wonderland idea. Just the little bit you’ve written about has already captured my imagination, which I think is one of the points of these blogs. :) I also like your sense of humour and writing style, so I hope to follow your adventure.
I hope you’re going to be able to post some pictures on your blog if you win because I’d love to see how it all turns out.
The other entry might have got a lot of comments but that doesn’t make it better. This entry is far more relatable, sounds like its coming from a genuine person, and has my vote.
Hi Heather! Thanks so much – I’m hoping it’ll be more wintery magic than frostbitten toes and snowstorms, haha and I guess “fairy lights” might be a British term? The little white lights on strings you put on the Christmas tree – I’m not sure what they’re called this side of the pond!
Emily you definitely have my vote for this category! I think your wedding will be full of wintery magic! I don’t know what fairy lights are… but I like the sound of it! Good luck with the planning!
Cheers,
Heather (Alternative category)
If you’ve never spent a winter in Winnipeg you have no idea; there’s a reason they jokingly refer to it as Winterpeg! Torontonians think it’s cold when it’s –10, Pegers run around in shorts at –10, try on a –40 daytime high. Having a winter wedding in Winnipeg is either gutsy or crazy, or maybe just a little of both. Either way you look at it I am sure this will be an interesting wedding to follow.
Emily you are so sweet & genuine- I really hope you win- You deserve it! Best of luck-we’re rootin’ for ya!
I hope you win cause you get enough summer weddings to read about in the magazines and online, I’d love to see someone different braving the elements and embracing winter for their wedding!
Hi Ann, thank you so much for your comment – part of my entering this contest was to be able to share with other brides a sense of what getting married really is all about. Sure, along the way there’ll be excitement in the planning, and I’m sure countless adventures along the way, but it’s so important to remember why it’s all happening. Thank you for your kind words, I definitely will :)
Congratulations on your upcoming wedding. It sounds like your Winter Wonderland will be you and your fiance’s dream wedding. That’s what weddings are all about right?
You have my vote, as well as many others, I can see. Have a wonderful wedding and remember to enjoy this special time with your fiance.
Oops, Judith, I just checked my friend’s page and apparently Carrie is the girl we have in common :)
Thank you again!! You guys make me smile – Carrie, I’m seriously thinking about it! We do sponsor 2 children already and I was throwing around ideas of what to do for favours… and I wasn’t really drawn to lip balms or candles or ornaments, and I LOVE the idea of using part of our budget to actually help somebody else… I think I’m sold! :)
Judith – I think we have a friend in common! My friend Clarissa said she was voting for two people she knew, me being one and I’m assuming you the other! Thanks so much for the offer, I’m sure we’ll be in touch! Good luck to you too – you got a vote from me too :)
Congratulations! I’m Judith (another finalist – bride again) and a Winnipeger – born and raised. I read the beginning of your post and thought, “Wow she’s brave!!”. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized how beautiful your wedding will be. My friends got married last year in November and took pictures at Fort Gibraltar in St.Boniface and their pictures turned out beautifully! My whole wedding will also be a DIY wedding – I’ve found affordable yet high quality vendors so if you have anything you’re still looking for, let me know.
Best of luck to you my dear!! You have my vote!
Hey Emily
Thanks for the vote! Yes, please do steal the child sponsorship idea!! I’m actually from Winnipeg too…I hope you get a beautiful snowy day!
Aww! Your wedding will be beautiful Emily! You sound excited and laid back about it all. I would love to read about your adventure on the way to your big day. :)
I hope you come out on top!
Aww that made my day! Thank you so much! :)
My dear, you are a breath of fresh air. Reading your introduction made me laugh out loud. You definitely have my vote! Congratulations!
Thanks Sarah I’d love to hear all about it :)
hahah I was drawn to this one because I’m getting married on December 5, 2009 in Edmonton. I have a total christmas fairytale land thing going on.
Sounds beautiful!
Awww thanks!! You’re the best! Yay Kyla you have good taste :)
I voted for you…cause….I’m from Winnipeg too! LOL
Wow, we are having the same wedding, colours, theme and everything! Although mine is Dec.12, 2009 and in Saskatchewan (just as cold as Winnipeg I believe!)
Hi Vicki. Click on Emily’s name at the bottom of the post or go here: http://www.weddingbells.ca/bloggersearch/vote/traditional/
