Luxury doesn’t have to mean $$$$$!

Back of postcard-style Save the Date
I think most girls dream of a Prince Charming to come and sweep them off their feet, and of walking down the aisle on their wedding day. I’ve heard some stories of girls knowing what they want since they were 12! However, I don’t think as girls we truly had much of an idea about the dollar signs that come along with most everything you shop for.
Threatening to burst our dreams is growing ever closer to the top of the budget when you haven’t even got half the things ticked off on the checklist. Nevertheless, if it came down to it, will hiring the 12-piece orchestra, or the white stallion for Prince Charming to arrive on really make or break your wedding day? Of course not. In the end, I think for all of us, what would matter most is having our fiancé standing at the end of that aisle, and our close family and friends to share that moment with.
Nowadays it can be hard to find deals, especially when you mention the word “wedding” and everything seems to triple in price. That just means as brides and grooms we have to get more creative when keeping that budget from boiling over.
1. Get a little crafty!
One simple way to help keep costs down is to print your own save the dates, or invitations. You can search for free templates online, or you can create your own from scratch on a program such as Microsoft Word. With some simple

configurations in page layout, you can adjust margins, flip orientation of the page, and even scale the sheet down to the exact size of the paper you will be printing on. Craft stores and paper stores have many different types of blank cards, or postcard sized papers that cut costs in our case by 65% compared to quotes we had received. And we actually enjoyed the time together designing and creating them. We were so excited with the result!
2. Shopping on the Web
I think a fun touch that can add “luxury”(without the price tag) and a special touch to the day, are customized beverage napkins. Depending on your guest list, you don’t need to order tons of them, and they make a cute keepsake for a scrapbook! I found a great site—weddingstar.com—which has favours, cake toppers, centrepiece ideas, guest books …you name it! They also offer a selection of customizable napkins for a decent price compared to what you’ll find when you shop around.
Before I found this site, I ordered my napkins from theknotshop.com. They have a great selection too, but there is a catch—they do not deliver outside the United States. I have an aunt who lives in the USA so she let me mail everything to her house, but not everyone can do that.
I’d love to hear other DIY projects and want to know your opinion on another one: Do you think I should cut more costs by creating my own table numbers, place cards, favour tags and menus or should I just hire someone?
It can be time consuming, but shopping around and browsing the Internet can really help you stumble across a money-saving promotion or some great ideas! I had to share this video with you before I go, it’s good for a laugh! Here it is: youtube.com/watch?v=6ff13zZ0h0k&feature=related – Enjoy! Thanks for reading!

You really have cut corners on $$$ but still have that Luxury feel, hopefully it meets all of our expectations! The nice thing is you have added your own personal touch. Hey we have to finish those gifts for the guests….soon!
I did our own Invitations, RSVP’s, Programs and table numbers. I had lots of leftover papers so I just used them and now everything is the same idea. I have posted pictures on my blog (www.tandr2.blogspot.com) I’m also doing DIY centrepieces. :-)
Great post, and I’m totally with you! We made our Save the Dates too (sorry but I refuse to call them STDs!!), I’ll be posting about them later, and I’ve got so much stuff on the internet – it sucks that a lot of the big places like the Knot only ship to the states, but lucky you have a relative who can get them up to you! :)
I’m designing a lot of the stuff for our wedding, too – invites, programs etc. and I’m ordering the special paper online – even with shipping I’m finding it lots cheaper than in stores. And eBay has become my new best friend – I got my tiara, guestbook, clutch and veil on there for a fraction of what they were charging in stores!
Thank you Judith!
I love designing things too, I’ve always had a creative side, and I find it fun and relaxing.
I was really fooling around in microsoft word for these save the dates, and I was trying things I had never really done before, setting my printer to print on that exact size card, and microsoft word to display that size of paper, maybe it’s basic but I had never had to do it. When I finished it and printed it out, I was practically jumping up and down. I was so excited about how great they turned out. We just mailed them on Monday, and everyone who has received them so far loves them.
:D
I definitely agree on the sanity part. My job can be really hectic sometimes, so we opted to have someone put the invitations together for us, since I would have freaked out if I didn’t have time to complete them. I would have loved to do them myself, but I was just worried it would fall to the last minute and I would have to rush it
Have a great weekend! Let me know what you think of the video, I couldn’t help but laugh.
Love your ideas and even more so, I really love that photo of the two of you. It so sweet!
AMEN to your whole post honey! Mark and I are doing 95% of our wedding as a DIY project – save the dates, social tickets, invitations, centre pieces, stationary, guest book.. you name it, we’re making it. Partly because I enjoy designing everything and the other part is that our budget is teeny-tiny and DIY’s are generally cheaper.
You could definitely hire someone, but the nice thing about making them yourself is that all your pieces will have the same colours and theme. But at the same time, if you are more stressed making them, paying the money to save your sanity is money well spent…LOL!
Great job on the save the dates and I’ll have to check out the video over the weekend.
