Let Them Eat Cake

Actually, this entry is about more than cake…it’s about FOOD!!

Rehearsal Dinner: This is going to be a really special dinner because it’s going to incorporate the foods of our two families. Gergely’s mom is an amazing baker and makes the most delicious Hungarian dessert: beigli. It’s a rolled pastry filled with sesame seeds and jam and according to Ger, his mom is the ONLY person who can make it right. I can’t wait to see all the goodies that she’ll whip up for us!

WBFeb10_pastryMy mom is, in my opinion, the best cook in the world! She, like me, loves food, and can make just about anything after tasting it just once. For the rehearsal dinner though, she’ll probably stick to the classic Chinese dishes: dumplings, stir-fried vermicelli, spring rolls, etc.

The best part though? We’re taking all this yummy home-cooked goodness to Quarry Lake, where we’re going to have a picnic! Surrounded by our family, closest friends, the mountains, and our favourite childhood foods, this is sure to be one of the most memorable dinners of our lives.

Reception Dinner: Although there’s a set menu at the Nordic Centre, where we’re having our reception, we are lucky that they’re willing to accommodate an eco-friendly dinner for us. We’ve agreed on starting the meal with mushroom soup, followed by free-range chicken and locally grown seasonal vegetables. Dessert is still a bit up in the air…maybe crème brûlée?WBFeb10_dumpling

Cake: Or should I say “Cakes.” Instead of a traditional wedding cake, we are going to have a table of our favourite cakes from Edmonton and Canmore. There’s been so many cakes that I’ve had in the past few years of which I’ve exclaimed, “I want this to be my wedding cake!” that I’ve decided to just include all of them. They’ll be ordered from some of our favorite cafés, like Upper Crust, Sunterra and Wild Flower Bakery.

But with over 10 cakes, which one will we cut? And should we still have the bride/groom figurines atop one of them?

    A girl after my heart! I LOOOOOVVVEEEE food! Reading your post has me drooling and anxious for lunch to come – we’re having sushi for payday lunch today.. yum! I’ve never had Hungarian food – will have to go searching for some.

    You could always skip the topper, have a personal type figurine in the middle of the cake table with all the cakes surrounding it?

    That’s going to be a stunning/yummy rehearsal dinner!

    That is a lot of cake – and there’s nothing set in stone that the cake topper has to be a traditional bride and groom. Ours certainly won’t be – it’s going to be DIY and VERY nerdy, but fun and personal :)
