Eco-Vintage

Carrie_2I’m Carrie, an internal medicine resident and Gergely, my fiancé, just finished law school. Our theme is eco-vintage and it will be held in Canmore, Alberta.  We want to plan our wedding with a global and environmental consciousness.  Eco-friendly weddings don’t have to be granola and vanilla.  In fact, it can be just as or more beautiful than a “conventional” wedding.  I think a bride can have the wedding they’ve always dreamed of while finding creative ways to leave the smallest carbon footprint and creating the least amount of waste.  Myself, the groom, and the entire wedding party will be wearing vintage or clothing they already have, which is one way to reduce consumption. The flowers will be either potted, wild, or from local farms.  Instead of sending invites that are traditional cards, (RSVP cards, maps, and envelopes, waste a lot of paper), we are going to send postcards that direct guests to a website where they can find all the necessary information.  The food will be locally produced (100 Mile Diet).  Instead of party favours, we will put the money into sponsoring a child, so each table will sponsor the child for one month, so with 12 tables, our child is sponsored for one year.  These are just some of the ideas so far.  I’m always trying to think of more areas that we can be more eco-friendly, and would love to get help from other bloggers/readers!

Hi! Congratulations to you, too! I’m in Calgary right now – just working. And it’s actually my brother, not my cousin! It IS pretty weird…

    Hey Allison!

I didn’t know you were getting married! Congrats! Are you still in Edmonton? Working? Residency? I need a dentist…

PS: Your cousin is dating my friend! Small world!

Hi! You may or may not remember me, but I was in the Dent 09 class. I’m also trying to plan an eco wedding! It will be a Chinese banquet type, so the only way I could tweak that to be more eco was to ask for fake shark fin. Since it’s in Vancouver, I’ll be able to find local BC wineries that are organic and buy from a local brewery. I’m going to use a minimal amount of cut flowers, and there’s a florist(s?) that has sustainable practices. Like you, I’m trying to cut down on paper, but will probably order eco invitations (Baron cards lets you print on the back). For our website, I want to have a special section on how the wedding will be eco. Good luck with your planning!

    Hey Heather!

Thanks for your comment! Yes we are definitely going to continue to sponsor our child after the year is up. I think it’s kind of symbolic to start out marriage with our first child as well. I do love the World Vision livestock campaign though. It’s so fun! Our guests could always buy a goat for our wedding…

I love your wedding ideas. Are you planning on continuing to sponsor the child after the year is up? I hope so! If not, there are one time cost items that may work better (Livestock, wells for clean drinking water, funds for school buildings and supplies, etc..)

Hi I’m in the other category (traditional) and I just voted for you ’cause I love that you are sponsoring a child – I may have to steal the idea!! :)
