When Lara Met Karlo
Well hello there! By now you know that I’ve made it into the final round of this here contest, the Weddingbells Blogger Search, and I’d just like to say a humongous THANK YOU to everyone that voted in the first round! It means the world to Karlo and I that we have so many people supporting us and we really can’t thank you enough—whether we win this thing or not, the fact that we’ve got this far is truly humbling and we truly appreciate you all!
Now, for those of you who aren’t already acquainted with myself and fiancé (wow, somehow I’m still not used to calling him that!), I’d like to tell you a little bit about us. As Maria Von Trapp once said, “Let’s start at the very beginning, a very good place to start…”
I met Karlo when I was 13 years old. I’m pretty sure the exact location was in the school cafeteria, but since it’s been over 15 years, neither of us can really recall the exact moment we met for the first time. We went to the same high school, and although Karlo was a grade above me, I saw him a lot since our school was teeny tiny (400 kids total). The funny thing is that although we’ve technically known each other for over 15 years, we barely spoke a word to one another all throughout high school. To be honest with you, I thought he was mute. What can I say, Karlo was really quiet, and I was just the loudmouth girl in the grade below him. He’ll never admit it now, but I’m pretty sure he purposely avoided me for all those years because back then we were just two very different people.
Fast forward to 2004, about five years after high school. Karlo and I finally crossed paths again after all those years. My best friend Angela was having a party, and even though everyone had gone their separate ways during university, the old gang from high school was all there. It was a mini-reunion of sorts, but I had no idea at the time how truly monumental that party would be.
Karlo made a really good (second) first impression on me that night. Turns out he wasn’t that quiet after all. There must have been 50 people at that party, and yet it was like we were the only two people there. I laughed at all his jokes, and he at mine. The attraction was instantaneous and within days we were dating; in fact, we were pretty much inseparable from that night on. The rest, as they say, is history…
So, now that you know how our story begins, stay tuned to see how the rest of it unfolds. Up next is the proposal, and I can tell you right now it was simple but amazingly out of this world at the same time. I’m sure every bride feels like her engagement story is the best one out there and guess what—we’re ALL right! Every single one of us does have the best story ever…and I can’t wait to tell you all about mine!
Oh, one more thing! We’ve sent out our save the date cards (which I will talk about in a few weeks), and are narrowing down our choices for theme/decor etc. Since we’re having our wedding in a sunny tropical setting, our colours will definitely be bright and cheery. Just wondering, which is your favourite colour combination?
A) Turquoise and Tangerine
B) Turquoise and Yellow
C) Tangerine and Yellow

twinkle, twinkle, little star927…
well, when i’m not listening to my Chris Gaines CD, or telling people not to post their bra colours, but instead to donate to the Breast Cancer Society, i’m online and voting for you and karlo. Glad to see the beat goes on for you two!

” your address? oh,i don’t need your address” [hangs up phone]
In Negril! Then our reception is a month later at Heritage Hall in Vancouver =) Didn’t you get your save the date card?! We sent them out 5 months ago!
I love turquoise so either one of the two. Brian says tangerine…
Where’s the wedding again?
Hi Lara!
Congratulations! Great post, I love turquoise! Great choice! I think I would go with tangerine, but I agree with other posters, using all three would be really nice!
We have a lot of couples that knew each other in high school! So neat!
Dear Lara:
Congrats!! I looooove turquoise. A lot.
Boo
Aww thank you all for your wonderful comments!
Maria, that’s a great idea – I think we’ll definitely end up incorporating all three colours!
Emily, that’s so true… that time apart really allowed us to develop into the people we are today and that’s the reason we work so well. Karlo and I have talked about how it’s a good thing that we didn’t date in high school- we definitely wouldn’t have lasted because we were too different back then!
Heather, that’s what I originally thought but since we’re also having an at home reception, it’s more like planning two weddings! Lord help me! haha
Thanks again for all your comments everyone:) I hope you all keep reading for the next 6 months!
Cheers,
Lara
Awwww… What a sweet story. Cute pic too.
Either A or B for me.
turquoise and yellow. fo sho.
Fabulous post, Lara! Even though I was there for all of the fun in high school and beyond, I’m enjoying reliving it through your eyes. You have an amazing story to tell and I can’t wait to see the next post!
ps: my vote for colour scheme is anything with turquoise in it! :)
Lara! Such a great first blog. I can’t wait for the next post. I like Turquoise and Tangerine … Yellows are so pretty too though. Its going to be so beautiful no matter what … and so fun! Can’t begin to express how happy I am for you two.
Hey Lara,
I think Turquoise & Yellow would be nice, especially for a destination wedding.
Congrats & Good luck with all the planning. Although having a destination wedding must simplify lots of it! Lucky!
Congratulations Lara!! I know quite a few couples who have a similar story – it’s such a great story.
I agree with Maria – why not use all three?? Yellow and tangerine are quite complimentary and then you’d have your turquoise as your accent colour – it’d really pop. That’d be so beautiful!
Great first post and I’m looking forward to reading how your planning unfolds.
Cheers,
Judith
Congrats Lara! I’d go with turquoise and yellow, too – anything turquoise/teal/aquamarine is one of my favourite colours, and they sound lovely and summery together, like the sun and the sea :)
David and I met in school too, also had a big gap and a mini-reunion!! Isn’t it funny how time apart gives you both time to grow – I think it’s better that we both had the time to become our own people and I really appreciate everything I learned in the “apart” years, although I went through some difficult times, it led me to the person I am today (and the person he wants to be with :))
Congrats again!
Emily AKA “Traditional Bride”
hi lara, great blog so far! i love turquoise and yellow together! although tangerine might be better for bridemaids dresses because it’s easier to skin tone match than yellow. just a thought! you could just use all 3 colours together.
