Bridal Makeup Tutorial
In the early stages of wedding planning I made a decision on something that seemed outrageous to some: I’ve decided to do my own wedding day makeup. How can I possibly have the courage to endeavour such a huge task? Simple: I enjoy and am actually obsessed with makeup application and products. This is kind of ironic and I’ll tell you why. Growing up in a predominately male family (two brothers and many male cousins), I was the girl that wore ripped jeans, T-shirts and runners and could be found chasing after my older brother: climbing trees, playing sports on the street and being the dummy for him to practice his wrestling moves on. Who would’ve thought that I would grow up loving anything remotely girly? You also couldn’t tell from looking at me that I enjoy playing with makeup since I run out of the house most days wearing glasses and not even a smidge of foundation. I’m not sure when I first became interested in makeup but I do know when it turned into an obsession—the year my BFFs gave me a M.A.C. gift card for my 20-something birthday. Ladies, I blame this all on you! Hehe, LOVE YOU!
For some women, applying makeup can be very intimidating so I’ve put together 10 tips that I’ve learned through my years of experimenting that I thought would help:
1. Spend some time researching. This could include:
a. Researching the best products for your skin type and complexion.
b. Read reviews on products from both makeup artists and regular women.
c. Watch makeup application tutorials on YouTube. I have spent quite a few hours watching many tutorials. What’s great about these videos are that they are shot by regular women so it’s easier to find videos that are very similar to your skin type/tone, ethnicity and face shape. **WARNING**: This is quite addictive and you may end up spending more time than you originally wanted to spend. You have been warned! Hehe.
2. Build your makeup kit a little bit at a time. You do not need to have every product all at once.
3. Samples are a great way to test out a product. Ask for samples, as most of the makeup counters will be happy to assist you.
4. To maximize your hard earned cash, purchase eye shadows in duos or quads. This is a great way to ‘test drive’ colours for about the same price as one colour. It also takes away the guess work of wondering which colours work well together.
5. If you’re an absolute beginner, begin with neutral colours or colours you’re comfortable with and work your way to more bold and daring looks.
6. Brushes can make a difference.
7. Don’t be afraid to experiment. Take your time and don’t rush your application.
8. You are beautiful! Makeup is meant to enhance your beautiful features and not disguise you. Play up the features that you love.
9. Practice, practice, PRACTICE!
10. Have fun!
I hope that these tips and tutorials will spark your creativity and encourage you to start experimenting. Every woman deserves to feel beautiful and it’s truly amazing what a little makeup can do to boost your self-esteem. Almost forgot to ask you something—Which of these three looks should I use for my wedding day: Neutral (first or second variation), Glowing or Purple (first or second variation)?
Good luck and have fun!

What do you think? Have you ever gone to the web?what do you think of it?
OoOO.. I was cursing you when I heard you were in Vegas because I wanted to come too! hehe. Thanks! I think I know what look I’m going with which I will discuss with you further at a later time :).
Definitely! I charge two kisses from your Sienna for my time, thanks. haha! Oh and maybe one of those wonderful slushy drinks you, sister and Joy are obsessed with making :).
yay!! I finally got to watch them haha.. they were in the technical difficulty stage when I was in Vegas trying to watch :)
I LOVE the last one so nice and clean yet dramatic, beautiful!
Can you do my make up too?
Oh my Rosie! You are such a dear; thanks for your opinion. Looks like the purple look wins. I’m glad we had a chance to catch up even though it was just through Facebook messages. It’s great having brothers but when I was younger; they were a pain – haha!
We definitely will have to meet up at Baked Expectations one evening to catch up and to get you your social tickets. It will be a great night not only to celebrate our engagement, but to hang out with so many people all at the same time – I can’t wait! Yes my generation of cousins are FINALLY getting married: Kuya Em, Kuya B, my Kuya, Jhoana and soon enough, it’ll be you guys. I’m not sure what it is about our family but we tend to grow up disjointed and become close when we get older. But I’m happy you reached out and I love you!
LOL! I find it funny you refer to me as such! Man I miss those days!
Love ya,
Ate Judith
Hi Ate Judith!

Also the same year Ninong em is having his.. Soon enough my generation will sell you guys our social tickets! HA! How scary. ,.. but would indeed be as fun as your guys’

Oh I forgot to mention.. if you see nothing but a blank white space after the text, it may be due to the fact that your connection might be blocking YouTube videos.
Everything should be fixed now so please enjoy the videos and let me know if there are still issues. Thanks for your patience!
Jessyca: Thanks dear! Your fears are totally valid because your wedding day is a HUGE day. You want to look good and you want to feel comfortable. I would strongly encourage you to do whatever you’ll feel most comfortable with on your wedding day because like I always say, “Money spent to save your sanity is money very well spent”. If you’d like to be conservative on the cost of having someone else do it for you, I would suggest booking an appointment with the beauty consultants at M.A.C. They apply make-up for free with the understanding that you will purchase $40 worth of cosmetics. Win-win situation! You get a professionally done face and products to take home. Best of luck to you!
Judy: Unlike you my dear, I’ve never actually had anyone do my make-up which is WHY I’m terrified of experiencing what you just described. Far too often I see women all dolled up for a wedding or fancy event and either they don’t look at all who they are or, you can tell they’re uncomfortable with their make-up by the look on their face. Judy, you’re such a sweet heart! Thank you for your wonderful comment.
Carrie: Aww!! You’re so sweet! If you were any closer to me I’d DEFINITELY do your make-up. Either for wedding or everyday use, I suggest you check out the youtube tutorials. They even have tutorials titled “Smokey Eyes for Asians” and such. If you’re ever in Winnipeg, let me know and it’s a date ;).
Nette: LOL!! Next time we should just nix the gift cards to each other because we always give each other the same gift from the same store.. we should just plan a make-up shopping date and spoil ourselves this year, then have cake and wine.. haha. You were warned! I told you you’d spend hours watching as many as you can! I’m so happy to pass on my guilty pleasure.. [insert evil laugh]. Love you!
Crystal: Aww! So glad you took the time to read them all! Thanks for your input regarding the Calla Lillies, you’ll have to just stay tuned to see which one I picked – can’t give it all away!
Sorry again for the technical difficulties! You guys are awesome for being so patient.
Purple seems to be fan favourite! Thank you everyone for your wonderful comments and your support. Much love! xoxo
Sorry everyone! We’re having a few technical difficulties so please check back in a bit.
<3 Thank you. <3
i am not sure how this person is seeing the video as when i click on any of them, it says “this is a private video, if you have been sent the video please accept the user’s friend request.”
Hey Judith! :) Caught up on all your blogs this morning! I’m so happy and excited for you! Congrats again on everything. You deserve nothing but the best!
I have to agree with everyone, purple is my favorite!….and this next comment is about your centerpieces. I don’t know what you have decided, but I like the calla lily in water. I had something very similar for my wedding….so I’m being TOTALLY biased. hee hee hee…but I thought that I would just share that with you.
Hope that all is well with you. Planning so far looks and sounds great! Can’t wait to see how everything pans out!
Best wishes!
Whoa whoa whoa! I’ve got to defend myself! Sister, you’ve repaid the favor and given me a gift certificate for make up as well! But then again, what else would we do with our time? Other than check out make up?! LMAO
Great post Ju! And L-O-V-E the vids!
I too luv the purple!!

I’m totally worried about getting someone who doesn’t know how to do “Asian” makeup, and yet I’m way too inept at doing my own. Can you come do my makeup for me wedding???
And I would agree: the purple look suits you best! Very fresh and pretty!
I know excatly what your talking about!!
I grew up in a family where it was mostly men and got in to make up in my 20-somethings too :)
and of course, I too plan on doing my own make up :)
Mainly because I’ve had it done before and always felt like it was too much. The artists that I have dealt with before did do amazing jobs in thier own right but it was waaay too heavy for me(tons of foundation/concealers/fake this and that) and your right, make up is only meant to enhance what you already have! Not cover it up! Every one is beautiful and it should show through the makeup :) I’d rather do it myself and do what I want and how I want it.
I’ve also got that “huh, you’re gonna do it yourself”-look… but hey we do it everyday anyways, why not our wedding day?
ps- love the purple too, but your so gorgeous you could go bare-faced and no one would be the wiser :)
Beautiful! Great tips, I really think I’m leaning towards the purple too.
I’ve thought about doing my makeup myself also, I guess I’m still just worried that someone can do it better than I can, and what if it doesn’t turn out right?
Great tips!!! It’s really made me reconsider hiring someone!
Lisa: Thank you! Looks like everyone’s liking purple so far.
Caren: Thank you sister! I’m so lucky to have a future sister-in-law like you, you’re always so supportive. I also thought doing my own make-up was a good idea because I’m so allergic to different products. The last thing I’d want is to have an allergic reaction on my wedding day. That WOULD NOT look pretty. Yes ma’am, saving money’s great! Thank you again sister for everything!
Thanks everyone! Hope you’re enjoying the videos as I had a fun time creating them for you :).
I love the purple on you! That’s great you are doing your own make up, this way, the outcome is something you will be happy with, since you know what looks good on you. And not to mention, it saves you money too! BONUS! :)
Keep up the great work!
Caren
I would agree that purple suits you the best.
“Thou art not lovelier than lilacs” is a poem I thought was fitting for your save the date.. but not a literal translation because you’re gorgeous :)..
I agree with these two ladies, purple all the way!
Aww Emily, you’re such a sweet heart! I hope you get to check out my youtube videos embedded at the end of the post because I believe the last purple look is like a smokey eye. After seeing your fashion photo shoot with Casey and all your other photos, you’re so photogenic that I don’t think it matters that you’re a noob.
Thanks dear for the wonderful feed back and again.. absolutely loving your save the dates! “Thou art not lovelier than lilacs”.. :)
Great tips and good for you for doing your own makeup. You are so pretty naturally you won’t need much! :) I’m still a bit of a noob when it comes to makeup application – I can do eyeliner (kind of – I’ve yet to master the art of the eyeliner BRUSH, haha) and a bit of gloss, but ask me to do a smokey eye or find a matching? Totally lost!!
I really like the purple look too – apparently purple plays up brown eyes the best, and it looks lovely on you. Plus it will go nicely with the green in the bridesmaids’ dresses :)
Thanks Jennifer! I hope you got inspired to experiment and if you did, I’d love to see the results of your experimentation!
I do love purple :). Merci!
Thanks for the tutorial! I think those are fabulous tips. BTW I really like the purple look. The first variation.
