Cake, Cupcakes & Invitations!
I love to bake. I love cupcakes, cakes, cookies and anything else with lots of sugar! This year, I’ve really gotten into making cupcakes and I was certain that I wanted cupcakes instead of a wedding cake. Then, to complicate things, I also tried making my first tiered fondant cake.
Now, I can’t decide which I like better!
The even crazier thing, is that I kind of want to do it myself! I know brides don’t usually make their own cake or cupcakes, but I have to admit I’m thinking about it!
If I go with cupcakes, I would also have a little mini cake for the cake cutting.

So, two decisions to make…
1) Cake or cupcakes?
2) Do it myself! or Let someone else do the baking!
Originally I was planning to have a wedding website and evites in lieu of invitations. I like that it is less wasteful and I think online RSVP is really convenient.
However, it seems that I have been talked out of it! Some of our relatives don’t really use the computer and I’m also slightly concerned that it will give the impression that our wedding is a casual event. I am considering having online or phone RSVP to make it easier. I hear it takes people forever to get their response cards back in the mail.
So, now I’m on the hunt for wedding invitations. I’ve enlisted the help of my sister (maid of honour), who is getting married four months after me! (Yes, it will be a busy year). She’s been looking online for nice invitations, or we could have invitations designed like tickets since we are having a “cirque” theme. We could have a cute name for our wedding like “Cirque D’amour.” What do you think?

OMG– they have red velvet cupcakes at Starbucks now? Oh man… I have to have one!!!
I have to admit that your cupcakes ARE rather impressive (and delicious) and I feel you would be hard-pressed to find a match, BUT, I agree with most here that you’ll probably have enough on your plate (badum-ching!) already with rehearsing, getting ready in your dress, entertaining crowds of people, etc.., before the big moment– seems like a lot!!! Maybe there is some sort of compromise to be had— like maybe making some cupcakes the night before (if they went in the fridge overnight would they still be fine the next day? I think so…) and having someone else make you a small “official wedding cake’ the day of, so you’ll have a nice surprise that you don’t have to worry about? Up to you to decide! I know it does sound a little crazy to everyone on this blog, but somehow I can’t see your cupcakes not finding a way to sneak into your wedding!
You certainly have the talent to do it yourself…but it might be just one more thing on the list of a million other things that you’ll have to do in the last couple of days.
PS: I just had a red velvet cupcake at Starbucks…cupcakes are awesome and your guests will definitely love them!
Thanks for all the feedback. I will think about someone else doing the baking! I think I am leaning towards cupcakes! I better figure it out soon! Only 74 days left!
Thanks for the offer Emily, but we found some invitations! We ordered them Friday and I’ll be blogging about them soon.
Olga, you’re so right. When something goes wrong, it’s always when you have no time to fix it and company is coming.
I think a small cake for the cutting ceremony (if you’re going formal and want to save cake for your ten-year anniversary) with cupcakes for the crowd is the best of both worlds. I wouldn’t suggest baking yourself, but enlisting a friend would be good. My friends and I are taking a cake-decorating class just for this reason!
As for your invites, I think a postcard done up like a circus poster would be sharpie-do! You could hand-write guest names (and plus ones or not) and have them RSVP by phone or online. Truth is, if you want these people at your wedding, how great would it be to chat many of them up before the big day? I’m an etsy-faithful and you could get a graphic design artist to make you something phenomenal.
I think cupcakes make tiny bundles of goodness instead of messy cake crumbs. Go for the cupcakes and tell us how it works out.
Listen to Twister she liked her cupcakes!
Do a schedule and figure out if you have time to do it yourself.
It’s such a hard call! As we all know…I am in LOVE with your baking, but I do have to agree with most other commenters that the day(s) before your wedding should be a time for you to relax and enjoy as much as possible. I think it should be left up to how you feel when you’re baking? Does it relax you? or sometimes stress you out if there’s a deadline? We’d all love to eat your job well done, but not if it’s going to be at the cost of your pre-wedding sanity.
Baking is the best de-stresser!
You might like our vintage plate clocks…you can’t put cupcakes on them, but they are very sweet! http://www.thefinaltouchstore.com/apps/etsystore/displayStore?storeowner=KandMdesign
I forgot to say – I choose cake! My BFF and her hubby had a cake and used boxed cupcakes for their favours..best of both worlds :).
YESSS!! Finally, a girl who was thinking the same thing as me! I wanted to make our cake but I quickly got shot down by Mark who insisted it’s one thing that someone else could do for us. I’m totally one for making your own cake, but now that I’ve had time to think about it, I’m glad I caved to the idea of handing over control to someone else. I agree with the ladies – let someone else worry about it.
Great job on the hubby’s cake by the way, that’s awesome and your cupcakes look yummmmmmy!
I’m designing our invitations because I was very specific about my vision – but then again, I love doing that stuff. Your saying is too cute! Love it! We’re still doing the paper invitations because like you said, not everyone uses the computer. However, we will not be included RSVP cards with the invitations, instead we’ve put the link of the online RSVP service in the invitation. Those that don’t get back to us, we’ll just contact them.
Great ideas – but now I want an afternoon cupcake :(.
Love the idea of cupcakes with a small cake! But I appreciate the business of getting married is quite hectic in and of itself, perhaps these ladies are right? Either way, cupcakes are lovely and adorable
Making the cake or cup cakes yourself is a nice idea except that there will be no time before the wedding day to make them and cupcakes are fussy-you’ve got to frost each one.Have a proper bakery do it. They have all the facilities and the staff to create what you want-and then they deliver everything as well. Save yourself the trouble. In my experience, whenever I made a cake for company, something always went wrong. The icing was too thin, or the cake was lopsided or something. Get someone who really knows what they are doing. I love cake, too!
I think cupcakes are a great idea, and I really liked it when my sister-in-law made them for me! One thing to think of though is how many people are invited, and if you have enough ovens to make that many cupcakes in a day or two? A cake seems to me like it might stay fresher longer, and the above poster has a good point that you will have alot of other things to do. A cake (or two) might be an easier way to make them yourself but have less hassel.
We’re doing cupcakes too! We’re getting a place called the Cupcakery to do them, they specialise in wedding cupcake towers and they’re going to look really nice, with light blue icing and white chocolate snowflakes. They also do a “giant cupcape” for the top for cutting, which is perfect. I would definitely get someone to do them – the last thing you want added to the already busy day is worrying about finding time for baking/decorating, and it’d be something that would have to pretty much be done day of/day before, and I think it might have the potential to just be one more stress – definitely book someone to do them :)
Also, LOVE “Cirque D’Amour!” It’s perfect for you guys! I also make wedding invites for lots of people (I’m in graphic design) and I’d be more than happy to come up with something circusy for you guys if you were interested :)
I would avoid doing your own cake or cupcakes! You will want fresh baked goodies for your wedding, and you do not want to spend the last few day/nights before your wedding baking. You will be busy enough with rehearsals and dinners, out of town guests, last minute running around and beauty routines. Its not worth the stress! Not to mention if something goes wrong, you’re the only one to blame!
Check out some of the beautiful invitations on etsy.
