Blogging, Save the Date Magnets and DJs
I’m so excited to be sharing this blog with you. Thanks for all your votes! It will be great not only to share this planning process with all of you, but also to have the chance to hear your advice! I hope to inspire your planning, spark some creativity and show that even those of you planning traditional weddings can have some “alternative” details. An alternative wedding is not about throwing all tradition out the window, but feeling free to change the traditions to represent you better.
The plans are really coming together for our circus themed vegan wedding. Just to clarify, we are going for a modern “cirque” look, not big top circus theme. It will be classy, theatrical, magical and of course romantic. In the beginning we weren’t sure whether we should go for the alternative theme, the planning is less straightforward and we didn’t know how people would respond. The response has been great. People are really looking forward to the wedding. We have a lot of great surprises planned that I’ll be sharing with you throughout the blogging process.
One of the things I wanted to share with you in this blog is our save the dates. We went for mini-magnets ordered from magnetstreet.com. It was easy to personalize them on the website and they came really quick. I think photo magnets are great because they’re fun to put on the fridge and they make great keepsakes.
*Savvy Saving Tip* – Before ordering wedding items online, Google promo codes. Ex. Magnet Street Promo Code. We found a promo code that saved us 25% off our total purchase.
Lately I’ve been thinking about whether or not we need a DJ. With technology these days, it’s so easy to program a playlist on your laptop. I like the idea of being able to choose all the songs and it seems more personal to have friends or family announce the first dance, and other memorable moments. What do you think?
In your opinion do you think Maleke & I should:
A) Hire a DJ or
B) Do it ourselves with a playlist!
If there’s anything you’d like to know about our wedding planning post a message and I’ll try to include it in a future blog! So we’re going with a DJ for sure now and giving them a playlist of songs we want. Thanks everyone for your feedback! Sylvie we now have less than 3 months until the big day! Exciting!
Hi Heather,
I’m super interested to see how your wedding will turn out, I love the alternate feel that you are going for…We also have the same wedding date…3 months left!
Hi Heather, first congratulations! Sounds like your wedding will be beautiful!
I’m in charge of our company Christmas party, and we save $$$ by using an ipod hooked up to a sound system – however I’ve felt during the three years that we have done it, you still have to have someone supervising it a bit.
Sometimes you’ll have everyone dancing and something comes on that just kills it. So you go over and re adjust the order of songs, I don’t know it’s a hard choice. I guess it could work out great, it works out great at our Christmas party, but I sort of man the music on and off, make sure I keep everything going.
At a wedding, maybe a DJ would be worth it, you wouldn’t have to worry about it at all, and you could still give him a list of things you want played, and a list of things you absolutely do not want to hear.
:)
Good Luck!
Hire the DJ! It’s one less thing for you to worry about if something goes wrong and the DJ will know how to keep the party rocking!
I like the laptop idea! Although I’m a bit of a music junkie so for my wedding I hope to be able to have a lot of control regarding what music is played and not rely entirely on a stranger who might play what the older guests want to hear but really isnt “us”. Good luck!
Congrats Heather! Love the theme=) Also good on you for pointing out the promo code tip – I don’t know what I would do without all the coupons I’ve found for my DIY projects!
We’re also thinking about doing the music ourselves for our reception (our local reception; at the destination wedding the resort provides a DJ), and a cousin of ours actually did just that at her wedding last year. They just hooked up their laptop to the sound system, hit play on their wedding playlist and then enjoyed the party for the rest of the night! It went off without a hitch and they saved a nice chunk of $$$ that way.
Looking forward to reading the rest of your blog…can’t wait to see pictures!
Cheers,
Lara (Destination category)
Congratulations Heather!
While music seems to be the one place that you could “cut corners” with, it can also make or break your wedding. I agree with everyone – a DJ would take the fuss out of worrying about whether you have the right mix of songs and could also alleviate any potential technical difficulties.
I think the magnet idea is a great one – which we will be using as well. Thanks for the tip – I’ll have to check out that site!
Best of luck!

Luca thanks for sharing your experience.
I think we will end up going with a DJ. It’s nice to hear advice from someone who tried out the playlist idea.
Emily I think we will give the DJ a playlist and our input to get all our favorite songs played!
Thanks for following my blog Kristin & Olga!
I look forward to reading about your wedding preparations. It promises to be one of a kind.
Hey Heather, great blog! As you know I’m not married and am not planning a wedding, but I think having a DJ deal with the music would allow you to worry about one less thing. If you do it yourself, you just never know what could go wrong. Good luck!
When we got married I didn’t use a DJ and it worked out great, for everyone that had the exact same musical tastes as me and my wife. Everyone else was out of luck. If I were to do it over I would hire a DJ.
Also the DJ does more than play songs. A good DJ reads the crowd and makes adjustments to the play list as required, runs games, and with a good emcee keeps the evening moving on time and at a good pace.
I’m a wedding photographer, and I’ve seen a number of great DJs and a few terrible ones. If you can find a good DJ they’ll make your day much more enjoyable. Just make sure you find someone you can trust. Besides, would you rather be worrying about the music or dancing and mingling with your guests?
Congrats Heather! Love the magnets! I’m going to be blogging about ours later in the competition – we did them ourselves, and our photographer did a VERY cool (and very different!) photo for us to use – I’m looking forward to sharing!
I think if you can find a DJ who’s open to lots of input about what songs you’d like, go for that – you don’t want to run the risk of things not working, or finding someone to monitor your equipment etc. I’ll take a look at your Facebook – and if you wanted to follow my blog I’m over at http://emily-jane.net :)
