Photos From Bridal Fashion Week: Carolina Herrera Spring 2013

Inspired by the iconic photographs of Cecil Beaton, Carolina Herrera produced a chic and sophisticated bridal collection with plenty of fabulous options for the fashion-forward bride, including a slinky Pippa Middleton-inspired cowl-neck dress (see above), a daring pant suit, and an adorable knee-length frock. We also spotted some of the season’s major trends, such as sparkle, lace and peplum detailing, but Herrera is definitely breaking new ground with her exquisitely hand-painted ballgowns and impeccable tailoring. From classic to trend-setting, there’s something for every type of bride in this beautiful collection.

Chic and Modern Bachelorette Party Ideas

When it comes to your bachelorette party, why not think beyond the bar scene? There are plenty of other enjoyable ways to get together with your best girls and celebrate your impending nuptials. We love the idea of learning something new as a group, especially if that skill will come in handy for your wedding! Taking a class together is a great bonding experience, plus it’s rewarding for everyone involved. Here are three of our favourite ideas to consider for your girl’s night:

1) Wine Tasting

You and your girlfriends love to get together over a glass of wine, so you may as well turn it into a learning experience! It can be really fun to develop your palate and figure out what types of wine you truly enjoy, and it’s always useful to be able to pair food with wine—especially when it comes to entertaining in your newlywed nest. You can even make a road trip out of the experience by heading out to different wineries and staying for a night at a quaint bed and breakfast.

2) Flower Arranging

Who doesn’t love fresh flowers? Taking a flower arranging class makes for a nice, girly day out, especially when you serve champagne and sweet treats. Plus, at the end of the class everyone leaves with the perfect parting gift—a beautiful bouquet! You may even choose to practice your new skills for your wedding by putting together your own centrepieces or arranging thank-you posies for your guests.

3) Cooking

A cooking class is a win/win situation—you get to expand your skills in the kitchen, have a laugh with your friends and eat tons of delicious food. Pick a type of food that you particularly enjoy (Italian, French or Indian, for instance) and learn how to make a tasty feast at home. Don’t worry about everything being perfect, either: if something goes awry in the kitchen it will just provide comic relief!

Wedding Gown Shopping Tips from Plus-Size Supermodel Ashley Graham

International plus-size supermodel Ashley Graham was recently in Toronto to launch Addition Elle‘s Spring 2012 lingerie collection (and flaunt her enviable curves for members of the media!). As soon as she mentioned in passing that she was recently married, we knew we had to get the scoop on her wedding dress shopping experience and honeymoon essentials. No matter what size you are, we guaranteed you’ll be inspired by Graham’s words of wisdom!

1) WEDDINGBELLS: How was your wedding dress shopping experience? Were you able to find a range of sizes and styles?

ASHLEY GRAHAM: My wedding dress shopping experience was much easier than I imagined it would be. I went to Nebraska, where I’m from, to get an idea of what I wanted. Within two dresses I had made my decision. I had no idea it was going to be that easy. I wasn’t looking at the sizes necessarily, all I cared about was the colour and the shape it created.

2) WB: Can you tell us a bit more about your wedding gown? How did you know it was the one? How did your dress make you feel?

AG: My dress is an off-white, almost ivory satin. The top part is almost like a bustier (strapless), and the skirt portion puffed out a bit. It is simple yet elegant. It is not designer and was not expensive at all! I thought I was going to have to pay tons of money because I would be getting a “larger” dress. But in reality, my dress was a size 8—I’m a size 16! My amazing seamstress added panels and worked her magic! Remember that wedding dresses aren’t always true to size.

3) WB: Do you have any advice for other “plus-size” brides? What styles do you find most flattering on a curvy body?

AG: Try on EVERY style! You never know what’s going to look good on you and accentuate your best assets! I wanted a mermaid-cut dress, but all it did was make my butt look bigger! It’s your day, and you should feel pretty and special.

4) WB: A wedding/honeymoon is a great time to start building a lingerie wardrobe. In your opinion, what items of lingerie should every woman own?

AG: Every woman should have at least three staple bras. First, she needs her every day bra that keeps “the girls” lifted and separated. Secondly, she needs a lacy bra to wear out, under a sheer top or on a hot date with her mister. And thirdly, she needs a good sports bra to hold down “the girls” during any sort of physical activity. I can’t stand it when I see a woman running and her boobs are flopping everywhere.

5) WB: In terms of packing for your honeymoon, what are your must-have clothing items and accessories?

AG: I say keep it simple. Your honeymoon is meant for you and your honey to chill and relax after all that hard wedding planning. Less is more in this case. (But don’t forget your naughty lingerie!)

5 Bridal Jewellery Trends You Need to Know Now!

If you’re in the latter stages of wedding planning you’re probably getting down to all the little details, including what jewellery you’re going to wear with your gorgeous gown. Whether your dream dress is simple or ornate, jewellery is a wonderful way to show your personality and finish off your bridal look. For some advice on what’s hot this season, we headed straight to Vancouver-based jewellery designer Elsa Corsi. Here are her top five sparkly picks for the coming wedding season:

1. Dainty Drop Earrings

Sometimes all you need is a little bit of sparkle on your ears, and Corsi notes that this stylish and approachable earring style is in high demand with brides. She points to Natalie Portman’s recent Oscar ensemble (see above) as the right way to wear this trend. A smaller earring means you can wear a necklace, too! Keep your hair and makeup simple and polished to complete the look.

2. Daring Chandelier Earrings

Glamorous, shoulder-grazing earrings never really go out of style, and they’re a great choice if your wedding dress has a more complicated neckline. Major earrings are perfect if you’re looking to recreate a sexy, red-carpet vibe on your big day.

3. Retro Chic Necklaces

Another jewellery trend Portman nailed on Oscar night? The chic collar necklace. Corsi notes that brides are gravitating to shorter necklaces with lots of rhinestone detailing. Pearls are still a popular choice for weddings as well, and Corsi thoughtfully outfits each piece with an ornate clasp so even the back looks beautiful—this is especially important if you have short hair or are planning on wearing your hair swept up!

4. Bold Cuff Bracelets

Depending on your gown, you might not need any jewellery on your upper body—that’s where cuffs enter the scene! The cuff is perfect for the modern bride, and the truly fashion-forward will dare to wear more than one. Layer different cuffs and bangles together, or wear one statement piece on each wrist.

5. Bright Colourful Stones

Swarovski crystals come in a rainbow of hues, so why limit yourself to clear for your wedding day? Colourful jewellery can be a great way to incorporate your signature hues, and we love a pop of colour with a white wedding dress! Naturally, colourful pieces make great bridesmaid gifts, too. Corsi’s delicate drop earrings in every shade from emerald green to canary yellow and hot pink are always flying off shelves!
