Desired Attire
Q: My fiancé is an officer in the navy, and we’ll be holding our reception in the officer’s mess. They have a strict dress code (no jeans, hats, T-shirts, etc.) How do I word that on the invitation so that people will know?
A: Wording the dress code on an invitation can be tricky. Dress codes like “business casual” can be too vague, leaving you with a lot of emails to answer as to what exactly “business casual” means. To avoid confusion and too-casual attire, it’s best to use wording that most people know. “Formal” or “Black Tie” are good indications that men should wear suits or tuxes and women should wear formal dresses. “Semi-formal” is also a pretty safe bet, as most people will still wear suits and dresses, though perhaps not suit jackets. If you’re still concerned that your guests might wear jeans, hats and T-shirts, you may want to make a small bracketed note next to your dress code on the reception invite that specifies attire to avoid.
