Pricey Presents

Q: We would love to include electronics in our registry, but we were wondering if there’s a feature that exists (on any registry) that would allow our guests to put in an amount of their choice, and not the full amount? For example, if we have a $1,700 Plasma TV on our registry, guests can put in any amount—their contribution towards the purchase of that TV. We don’t expect them to buy us that TV per se, just contribute towards it.

A: One way to register for more expensive gifts while giving guests some inexpensive options is to register for gift cards at the electronics store of your choice. For example, you can register for gift cards worth $20, $50, $100, etc. This way guests can choose how much they want to contribute to your larger purchase. Most major department stores allow you to register for gift cards. If gift cards aren’t your thing, you should check out the website ourwishingwell.com. It’s a cash registry website that’s set up like a gift registry. You simply choose cash amounts that guests can contribute, and indicate what gift their money is going towards. You can even create a personal wedding website for your big day, complete with guest book and RSVP function. Another cash registry website is dreambank.org. Dreambank raises money for a “dream” rather than specific gifts, and doesn’t set specific cash increments.

I recently heard of an AMAZING registry idea where couples can register for their honeymoons! ! ! You and your groom register for the honeymoon of your dreams and, instead of giving a gift, guests contribute towards it – they can donate any sum that works for them. I think this is the perfect registry idea if you, like me, already live with your man and possess most household essentials. We found this registry option through The Bay (thebay.ca).
