Q: For a variety of reasons (like already having three children together!) I feel that wearing a fancy white gown is not really the right choice for my wedding day, but my family wants me to dress up. Do you have any suggestions?
A: One of the dilemmas mature brides face is whether to go all out with a traditional wedding, or to keep it less formal. When it comes to the dress, etiquette expert Peggy Post explains, “Although white, in all its many shades and pastel tints, is still the conventional choice for long, formal and semi-formal bridal gowns, the ultimate decision about colour belongs to the bride.” This means the colour (and style) of your wedding attire is completely up to you! You may want to consider a stylish shift dress, or a semi-formal skirt suit à la Carrie Bradshaw, or you could even wear a gorgeous pantsuit! As for colour, take cues from your colour scheme and from the season: if it’s a spring or summer wedding opt for a gorgeous bright colour, and if it’s a fall or winter wedding consider a rich, warm hue.

I say it’s your day and the people who are there for you and love you will want you to feel your best and most beautiful…if that’s in something other than a traditional white gown, so be it!
