Cake Commotion

Q: My soon-to-be mother-in-law is going to be making our cake…but she says the bottom layer has to be made of carrot?! What do I do?

A: There’s no wedding cake rule that says the bottom layer of the cake has to be carrot—which means this must be your mother-in-law’s preference. Is it possible that carrot cake is a family tradition she wishes to honour? Ask her if there’s a particular reason why she wants the bottom layer to be carrot, and explain to her while carrot cake is delicious, it was not exactly what you had in mind. This is a tough situation because while it is your wedding, she has been kind enough to offer to make the cake and you don’t want to create any kind of hostility with her before you’re even married. Standing up for what you want is highly encouraged, but do so in a way that won’t create any problems down the road.

Actually, the carrot cake layer isn’t unheard of. Is she making a huge tiered cake? Carrot cake is a lot denser than most cakes and can be nessisary support if you want a lot of height. If you have five layers, a regular white cake, say, wouldn’t be strong enough to support them, it would sag. Carrot cake is one of the more delicious cakes that is dense enough to support a massive cake above it.

If she’s making a smaller cake, say for 100-150 people, it can really be made out of whatever you want.

    Ahh, mother-in-laws.
