Maiden in Distress
Q: I’m my friend’s maid of honour, and I have no idea what I’m supposed to be doing. I want to help make this the best wedding ever but I’m not sure where to start.
A: The responsibility of the maid of honour is really to help out the bride wherever needed. However, there are some traditional duties that most maids of honour will be expected to fulfill. During the planning phase these include assisting in the gown shopping, organizing and hosting the bridal shower, planning the bachelorette party, making sure the bridesmaids have completed their tasks, letting guests know where the couple is registered and finding a gift on behalf of all the bridesmaids.
On the day of the ceremony the bride will need assistance getting ready and finishing up with any last-minute tasks. During the ceremony the maid of honour holds the bride’s bouquet when the rings are exchanged, and is a witness to the signing of the marriage certificate.
During the reception the maid of honour will often make a speech, help to organize guests, assist the bride in changing into her going-away clothes, take care of the wedding dress and presents, and clean up afterwards.
Help is here for first-time bridesmaids.
