RSVP by Phone

Q: My fiancée and I recently went to a stationery store to look at wedding invitation samples. With the added cost of RSVP cards, envelopes and stamps, we were shocked at the final prices. We are considering just having everyone RSVP by phone or email, as we are also environmentally sound people and feel that telephone and email are less wasteful in terms of paper consumption. Is this a viable option in a more modern wedding?

It’s completely OK to leave out RSVP cards, half the time people don’t end up sending the cards back in time and you end up having to call them anyways. However, if you’re stretched for time, email is the way to go. You can even create a new account, that way you can keep track of your guests’ responses separately from your other emails.

My fiance and I wanted to eliminate all the paper wasted with save-the-date, invitation, response cards, etc. Therefore, the only mailed out piece we did was the invitation with options for people to RSVP via email or phone. I also posted all the details on our website so that people can access the directions, accommodation and itinerary.

Even our grandparents use email except for one but they were okay with “phoning” in. :-) We have had no issues with the email/phone response method.

We are getting married October next year and I would like to eliminate all use of paper for “Save the Date”, Invites and RSVP’s and use the internet. Save for the elderly guests with no computers. Does anyone know of a site that can handle all of my wedding organizing and invite issues? Thanks so much…

We used SeeVooPlay.net to handle our telephone RSVPs and it was very inexpensive and easy to use. I had several guests comment on how unique it was…no one thought it was “cheap” or “tacky.” And at 30 bucks it couldn’t be beat. We gave them the guest list, had the number printed on the invitations, and that was that. Got the final summary at the end, on time, and only had 3 people I had to contact. They offered to do it for me but since I had time we just did it ourselves.

Our wedding is in June of next year, but of course we are really excited to tell everyone. My sister-in-law to be gave me the idea of sending out “announcement/save the date” picture cards that can be printed at Costco for next to nothing. She does this for every event. It’s great because we will put a nice engagement photo with a nice little poem or something and the date of the wedding.

My Fiance and I are using the telephone/email response as well. It worked very well for a friend of ours. Also, a couple of paper and money saving things we did: We only sent out save-the-date cards to guests who would have to fly to our wedding (about 20 couples) and we put those inside our Christmas cards to save on envelopes and postage. Also, our invitations are what I think is called ‘envelopments,’ which basically means you don’t need an envelope — it’s an invitation and envelope in one. I’m using a die-cut machine at a local scrapbooking/paper store to make them. They have a template for it. When the invitation is closed it’s a square, when you open it up, it looks kind of like a 4 sided star, if that makes sense. They just need a little seal on them to make them secure for mailing.

Any suggestions on wording for an email/phone response?

  • Erinn says:

We are also doing this for our June wedding. I just printed up small cards on my computer, worded similar to formal RSVP cards, requesting that guests reply by phone or email. We felt that with postage and envelopes, it ends up being a lot of wasted paper. The other nice thing is that guests have a chance to include a personal note about why they can’t attend or how much they’re looking forward to coming.

my fiancee and i are using rsvp by phone and email, we have a tight budget and couldn’t see the point of spending the extra cash on reply cards, most people have internet nowadays (we have a seperate “wedding” email for rsvps and wedding information as well, made up of both our last names) and for those who don’t have email the phone is also handy. I’ve seen it done before and they all said it worked out ALOT easier that way

  • Johanne says:

There are doing the all-in-one invitations in print shops. The below part rips of and they are like a post card so you don’t have to pay the extra enveloppes… Hopes it helps we are using those ones for our invitations and often if you go in print shop they are less expensive. They can also print in your theme color(s).

I was thinking for my wedding of sending out RSVP cards, however keeping all the ones i get back and re-using them as foldable place cards for the reception tables.. i was thinking of something as follows:

    Table Reserve
    Mr. and Mrs Doe
    (kids)

    __ will be attending

    good idea? or too complicated??

  • Christina says:

We’re doing email RSVPS for the majority of the guests, with RSVP cards (printed on our home computer, not ordered from a fancy shop) only for a few older out of town guests. I think this is a great way to cut costs and be environmentally friendly, and I’d love to hear other tips people have on limiting the amount of paper and waste that goes into a wedding!

  • Maude says:

I used the Internet as well for my wedding RSVP as most of our guests are oversees. I actually created a website with a RSVP form and would get the confirmations redirected to me by email. Very easy way to track as well.
    Go for it!

  • Sylvia says:

it may be a good idea but don’t forget a lot of the older generation do not have a computer and would not know how to use email

  • Colleen says:

That is an awsome Idea … my future husband and I are also trying to find ways to cut costs and be enviromently savvy … Including using 100% recyclable items! Paperless as much as humanly possable and reuse almost everything! I am finding that the more enviromently sound my wedding is the more I am saving!

  • Ashley says:

We are doing this for our wedding next year…I wanted to do email invites (I’m an environment “nut”) but I compromised for email/phone rsvps…it’s a great idea, hopefully we’ll start a trend!

  • Janna says:

This sounds like a very good idea and will be happy to use it for my own wedding! Thank you!

  • Lisa says:

We are getting married on Oct 6th this year and we used the RSVP by phone or email in our invitations. We had a deadline to RSVP by of September 15th and on September 14th we only had 2 couples that hadn’t responded. I have had friends who used the reply cards and had to spend a lot of time tracking people down to find out if they are coming or not. I think email is very convenient for people these days and the phone is good for those that don’t have a computer.
