Engagement Party Plans
Q: My fiancé and I would like to keep our ceremony small. However, we’d like to have an engagement party with all of our friends there. Do we have to invite everyone on the engagement party list to the ceremony?
A: Guest lists tend to be one of the most stressful aspects of planning your wedding celebration and while it’s understandable that you want all of your friends present at your engagement party, failing to include them on your ceremony guest list will only cause you more heartache.
In her book, Emily Post’s Wedding Etiquette, etiquette guru Peggy Post says it is considered poor taste to invite anyone to an engagement party who will not be invited to the wedding. However, due to impracticality and financial restrictions, paring down the guest list is common among couples these days. But make no mistake, some feelings may be hurt. For all of your wedding events, be sure to select your guests carefully and offer a sensitive and heartfelt explanation to friends who do not receive an invitation.
