Pricey Presents

advice » dear belle » planning

Q: We would love to include electronics in our registry, but we were wondering if there’s a feature that exists (on any registry) that would allow our guests to put in an amount of their choice, and not the full amount? For example, if we have a $1,700 Plasma TV on our registry, guests can put in any amount—their contribution towards the purchase of that TV. We don’t expect them to buy us that TV per se, just contribute towards it. Read the rest of this entry »

Many Thanks

Q: After my bridal shower, should I send out formal thank-you notes that mention specific gifts, or can I make thank-you notes for all the guests and give them out as they leave the shower? Read the rest of this entry »

The Best of Friends

advice » dear belle » planning

Q: We picked our wedding party last year when we got engaged. My bridesmaid and maid of honour are great, and I wouldn’t change them for the world. However, my husband-to-be is actually considering changing his best man. Is there a way to go about this that won’t offend the current best man, or should he just leave it the way it is? Decor Dilemma

advice » dear belle » planning

Q: Our reception is being held at a simple community centre instead of a fancy reception hall. We are looking for cheap ways to dress it up, so it will look different and a bit classier for our wedding day. Read the rest of this entry »

Family Blessings

advice » dear belle » planning

Q: I’m getting married in two months to a wonderful man who is not of the same ethnic background as my family. The problem is my grandmother is notoriously prejudiced and quite vocal about it. Nobody has had the courage to tell her that my future husband is of another ethnic background. I want grandma to be at my wedding, but I don’t want her to ruin the day. How should I deal with this? Off-White

advice » dear belle » planning

Q: For a variety of reasons (like already having three children together!) I feel that wearing a fancy white gown is not really the right choice for my wedding day, but my family wants me to dress up. Do you have any suggestions? Read the rest of this entry »

Potluck Wedding

advice » dear belle » planning

Q: We are a mature couple with three children between us. We would like very much to get married but have little money beyond what we need to meet our day-to-day expenses. We’ve been thinking about hosting a potluck dinner and surprising everyone by turning it into our wedding. Is this a good plan? Is it bad taste? We don’t want or need any wedding gifts, just the pleasure of sharing a special event with people we love. Read the rest of this entry »

Q: I’m interested in wedding genealogy charts, but I looked everywhere on the Internet, and I couldn’t find a close-up of what one should look like or how to do it yourself. Any ideas for formatting genealogy charts? Read the rest of this entry »

Reception Relay

advice » dear belle » planning

Q: We’re getting married at 6 p.m. and our dinner starts at 7 p.m. at the Hall. We have already arranged it with the Hall and the caterer that the bridal party will arrive at the hall at about 7:45 p.m. after pictures are taken. The dinner is buffet style and the bridal party is scheduled to arrive after everyone is seated with their food. How can we keep our guests entertained during this hour or so, especially while they are waiting to go up and get food? Read the rest of this entry »

Weight-Gain Woes

advice » dear belle » planning

Q: I know that many of the articles around health and fitness are catered to topics such as weight loss, but I am a young business woman with an active, high-stress job, and I am looking to put on 5-10 lbs before my wedding. I have been slim figured all my life, and I would love some diet suggestions that may help me stay healthy and fit, but also gain some healthy weight before my big day. Read the rest of this entry »

Registry Rules

advice » dear belle » planning

Q: My fiancé and I are on our second marriage. We are planning a destination wedding in Jamaica, with only our grown children in attendance. We would like to know if it is all right to send out announcements, rather than invitations, with a registry website. Is this tacky? How can we word this? Thank you! I need help!
