Two of a Kind

Cakes and favours go together like love and marriage. Here are five tasty pairings that will sweetly suit your wedding day theme. Compiled by Roseanne Dela Rosa

Chocolate Delight: Favour
There really can be too much of a good thing. If you’re worried about overindulging your guests with chocolate, pair your cake with delicious almond dragées. These tasty sugar-coated nuts symbolize happiness, prosperity, health, fertility and longevity.

Chocolate Delight: Cake
Show off your sweet side with a rich chocolate cake. This orchid and pomegranate confection (perfect for a fall wedding!) is covered with chocolate fondant and embellished with orange and hot pink Phalaenopsis orchids and sugar pomegranates. Planning a summer wedding? Change the orchids and pomegranates to daisies and lemons for a warm weather feel.

Regal Feel: Favour
All Arabian nights must come to an end and when it’s time to bid your guests adieu, send them off with a rich and tasty creation. This vanilla cookie, made of hand-decorated royal icing, is the perfect match to an opulent cake. For a bona fide Moroccan treat, have your cookies decorated in shades of deep turquoise, pink or purple.

Regal Feel: Cake
A regal affair deserves a rich and opulent cake reminiscent of an Arabian night. This three-tier Moroccan-inspired confection is covered in rolled fondant and gilded with 24-carat gold.

Think Pink: Favour Favour
Carry your pink theme to a personal level and, in lieu of favours, donate to the Breast Cancer Association on behalf of your guests. These pink ribbons and favour cards (explaining that you’ve made a donation in honour of your guests) are the perfect way to show your support with style.

Think Pink: Cake

This four-tiered confection features handmade sugar blossoms dusted in different shades of pink – complete with edible jewelled centres. For a less feminine version, have your cake artist create the blossoms in hues of yellow, green or purple.

Just Beachy: Favour
Favours don’t have to be as elaborate or stylish as your cake. In fact, they don’t even have to match your W-day motif completely. This box of sweets is the perfect example of how you can keep things sweet and simple.

Just Beachy: Cake
Give your guests a taste of the sea with this four-tier cake, perfect for hosting a beach-themed reception. Covered in fondant, overlapped with circles in four shades of blue (to mimic the motion of the waves) and topped with flocks of seagulls (made from gum paste), your guests are sure to imagine the sand between their toes with every bite.

Sweetness and Light: Favour
Say “thank you and goodnight” by sending your guests home with a mini-version of your wedding cake. If replica cakes don’t quite fit your budget, skip the traditional cake altogether and offer your guests a variety of tiny treats to taste at the party or take home for later.
