About the Couple
Bride: Laura Kinghorn
Groom: David Smythe
Occupations: Laura is a district training manager for Guess and David is an accountant.
How they met: Laura and David met at a party where they both knew the host. At the time Laura had just graduated from high school and David was 19. They didn’t hit it off that night but the next day David got word that Laura liked him so he went to the Guess store where she worked and asked her out.
Favourite date: Their first date. They went for gelato and a movie and have been inseparable ever since.
What attracted her to him: “David ignored me and wouldn’t pay attention to me. Who was this guy who wouldn’t give me the time of day? I had to have him!”
First thing that attracted him to her: “Everything about her was perfect.”
Engagement story: Since they were both still in University, they had planned to celebrate Valentine’s Day on the Saturday after Valentine’s Day since February 14th fell right in the middle of midterms. Laura was working on Saturday and David came into the store to take her away. He had arranged for Laura to have the entire weekend off. David took Laura to her parents’ house to pack a bag with three outfits: one that was comfortable (for the drive) one that was warm (for skating) and one that was dressy (for dinner). He did not tell Laura what each outfit was for. They drove to Lake Louise, and David gave Laura a Tiffany necklace as her Valentine’s gift. After they checked into the Fairmont hotel, David told Laura to put on her warm outfit so they could go skating. They walked out to the lake and sat on a bench to put their skates on. David and Laura often go skating in Edmonton and David always ties Laura’s skates. When he was on his knee to tie her skates he pulled out a ring and asked her to marry him. Even though it was extremely dark, Laura had no problem seeing her Tiffany ring sparkle! She said yes, and then they went skating.
Words they live by: Don’t stress about things you cannot control and laugh everyday.
