How they met: “In my hometown of Estevan,” says Nicole. “After spending a year in Africa, I returned home for the summer of 2006 to spend some time with my family before moving to Toronto to begin grad school. Chad had recently moved back to Estevan, from Saskatoon, after finishing university to start his career. Since Estevan is such a small place, we had a number of mutual friends and therefore saw each other quite frequently. One night we began chatting and he asked me to call him some time, so I did!”
Engagement story: “It was my birthday and birthdays for me are a huge, huge deal!” explains Nicole. “I had been at school all day and was on my way home because Chad told me he was going to cook dinner for me. When I got home and walked towards the front door I noticed a rose tied to the door handle and was really curious what was going on,” she remembers. “I opened the door and walked into a flood of candles, roses and rose petals! I was totally oblivious that this would be our engagement and thought, ‘wow he is being so romantic for my birthday!’ I went to the top of the stairs and saw the entire stairwell littered with more candles, and rose petals, all leading me to the bottom of the stairs where Chad was waiting! As I approached him I started to tell him about my day and he got down on one knee and I finally realized what was happening!” she exclaims. “I started screaming and crying and did not hear a thing he said! Finally I calmed down enough to say yes! Chad had bought a beautiful silver ring from Tiffany’s (as my temporary engagement ring) and he told me that I could pick out my own engagement ring! Two rings, amazing! To top it all off, Chad had actually made dinner and bought me a cake, so it was truly the perfect birthday.”
