About the couple
Bride: Kim Ironmonger
Groom: Jeff Soehner
How they met: “Jeff and I first met in Niagara on the Lake back in 1993; he was the chef at my parents’ inn, The Old Bank House,” says Kim. “We then dated for three years but ended up going our separate ways. On a seemingly random occasion, on October 9, 2008 after years with no correspondence, Jeff called me up and asked if he could see me. The very next day on October 10, Jeff walked into my store, Valencienne, and after the initial pleasantries, he asked me to get married!” she exclaims. “A little taken aback, I said I at least needed a date, he said okay and two weeks later we were engaged.”
Engagement story: “During the time when Jeff came back into my life, my mother was terminally ill and actually died on November 6, 2008. Jeff had wanted to show my mother the engagement ring while she was in hospital but that day she passed away so he couldn’t give me the ring then,” explains Kim. “Waiting for an appropriate time he held onto it until November 15.  On that night when I got home from work he looked up from his computer and said, ‘Honey I was in Indigo today and purchased a beautiful book for you. It will put a smile back on your face.’ I took the small hardcover book in my hands and read the cover, ‘Poetry to Make You Smile.’ I gave both him and the book a double take (poetry is completely lost on me),” she says. “However, in good humour, I opened the first page and in big black writing it said ‘WILL YOU MARRY ME?’ and on the second page he had carved out a hole in the book to reveal the most magnificent ring. I know how much my mother adored Jeff, and I can’t help but think that she had a hand in this incredible love story.”
