About the Couple
Bride: Carina McDonald
Groom: Trevor Huggins
Occupations: Carina is a graduate student at the University of Calgary and Trevor works for the City of Calgary.
How they met: They met on the Internet (Carina assured her mother that “Yes, I have Googled him!”) while they were attending universities in different parts of the country. Trevor came out to Carina’s university for a volleyball game one weekend and they decided to meet up. It was love at first pint (of beer, that is!).
Favourite date: Being spontaneous people, Carina and Trevor have a hard time planning “dates,” but one of their favourite times together was the day they decided to spontaneously board a train in London and go to Scotland with no prior plans, no accommodations sorted out and no idea where they were going. They wound up in Edinburgh, in the rain, laughing hysterically while trying to find a hostel!
What attracted her to him: His sense of adventure. He’s always up for anything and embraces her passion for international travel, sports and adventures. Change is a frightening thing for a lot of people, so Carina has endless respect for his ability to embrace it. He was willing to meet a girl from the Internet on the other side of the country!
Engagement story: After backpacking around the United Kingdom, the couple flew to the United Arab Emirates for a trip that they’ll never forget. One evening they were on a trek in the Arabian Desert and decided to race each other up a sand dune. When they got to the top of the dune they came upon a desert that seemed to be on fire—the sunset was blazing over the mountains. At that moment Trevor got down on one knee and asked Carina to marry him. They spent the night at a Bedouin camp celebrating with belly dancers and camel rides under the starry sky. Once they got home to snowy Calgary, Trevor presented Carina with a bottle of sand; it was the sand from underneath his knee when he proposed.
Words they live by: Live, love, laugh, travel.
