About the Couple
Bride: Heather Thorpe
Groom: John Millikin
How they met: Through their mutual friend Mary.
Engagement story: “I did every deceitful thing I could think of to convince Heather that a trip to San Francisco had nothing to do with me proposing,” John begins. “Ever since we first met I had been telling her about my favourite place in the world, the undeveloped north coast of California. I desperately wanted to propose to her there, but I also wanted it to be a complete surprise. My original plan was to propose to her in an area called the Lost Coast, about eight hours north of San Francisco, a remarkable, rugged place my brother and I had stumbled upon two years earlier,” he says. “When we finally reached the Lost Coast, the sun was threatening to set. The following morning, Heather and I went for a walk along the cliff tops above the ocean at the edge of town. I decided to bring the ring just in case. Heather was beside me staring at the ocean, so I pretended that my bad knee had painfully buckled in order to justify bending down on one knee. Heather became very concerned and wanted to help me, asking what she could do. I asked her to grab my hand, and as she did, I used my free hand to finally produce the open box with the ring inside. Heather immediately began crying, said ‘yes,’ and the rest is history,” John shares.
