About the Couple
Bride: Amanda Patterson
Groom: Erik Sobry
How they met: “Erik played on my good friend’s hockey team that was playing a tournament up in Jasper,” says Amanda. “I love to snowboard so I couldn’t pass up the cheap room rates the hockey team was getting near the ski hill.” After commenting that Amanda’s drink (Blue Curacao and Sprite) looked “gross,” the two started to casually chat. Their conversation continued once they got back to Calgary and as Amanda says, “We soon became inseparable and have been teasing each other ever since.”
Engagement story: While Erik’s proposal didn’t exactly go as he planned, as Amanda explains, it was still a very romantic gesture. “While I was sleeping, my finger started to feel like it was on fire. I woke up and noticed that Erik had my hand in his. Because my finger hurt, I tried to yank it back and asked him what he was doing. Erik said putting on my wedding ring. I screamed, jumped up and yanked my hand away and sure enough, there was a gorgeous ring on my hand, turning my finger blue. I loved it and said yes. According to his plan I was supposed to wake up and sleepily go downstairs to let our puppy out and notice the massive bouquet on the dining room table. He would follow me down and ask me to marry him. I would say yes. Ultimately it was so romantic in our own way.”
