About the Couple
Bride: Renée Schisler
Groom: Stephen Schick
How they met: They met while playing Ultimate Frisbee. “We ended up on the same team after our separate teams didn’t have enough players for the summer season. We may have noticed each other, but we didn’t ‘click’ until the end of the season when the team went out to a pub, which by coincidence was having a music bingo night. It turned out we were the only ones who actually knew the songs and wanted to win—it was a good bonding experience,” the couple share. “Our first date had to wait another month until Stephen got back from an amazing trip to Greece and Paris, but we kept in touch over email the whole time.”
Engagement story: “Stephen decided that the perfect moment to propose would be at the first Ultimate game of the summer season, exactly three years after we had met. He bought a ring and lots of sticky letters to put on a Frisbee to read, “Will you marry me, Renée?” He intended to propose in front of our team during the pre-game cheer. As fate would have it, I was home sick that day and Stephen began to panic when he realized I wasn’t coming. The unanimous vote from his friends and the team was to go home and propose right away!” Renée remembers. “I was so surprised to see him home early from the game. When he showed me his ‘new disc,’ my first words were, ‘Are you serious?’ He reached into both of his pockets and said, ‘If that’s a yes?’ and handed me a ring box and a red candy ring pop, which is what I’d told him was all I needed. I felt ecstatic yet guilty that I hadn’t been out on the Ultimate field as planned. He reassured me that it was probably for the best, because who could play a game of Ultimate after such an incredible moment?”
