About the Couple
Bride: Melissa Tambi Young
Groom: Martin Tobias Kruger
How they met: Melissa and Toby met in 2006 in Fredericton, New Brunswick, at an annual law school pub crawl. Being an upper year, Melissa had the honours of ridiculing some of the first-year law students who approached their ’bench’ (legalese for where the judge sits in the courtroom) at the pub. One of these brave first-years happened to be Toby. The first-years were dared to remember all of the upper years names at the bench, and Toby was the only one who remembered Melissa’s. This set the wheels in motion and lead to Toby's attempt to ask Melissa out (which she didn't clue in to until he asked for her number!). They got to know each other as they tried to one-up the other by coming up with creative dates. Since then, their mutual love of canoeing and travelling has brought them closer than ever.
Engagement story: Meeting up with Toby at the end of his trek across South America seemed to Melissa like the perfect opportunity for a proposal, but she doubted that a ring would have been along for the ride in such wild environments. And she was half right. Toby had kept the custom designed ring (made by a family friend) at home, and had instead purchased a ring near Machu Pichu for his intended proposal when they reached the coast. After a long day of biking along some particulary rocky roads in Chile, the couple decided to take a night shuttle to the hot springs in Pucon. It was there in the spur of the moment that Toby decided to propose surrounded by mountains under a star-light sky. “I was totally surprised and it was perfect!” exclaims Melissa.
