Jennifer Scott and Bobby Brooks, August 21, 2009, Ottawa, Ontario. By Rebecca Essegern
About the Couple:
Bride: Jennifer Scott
Groom: Bobby Brooks
Occupations: Jennifer manages a bar and Bobby is a hockey coach.
How they met: Jennifer reminisces, “Bobby was the first person I met in college. He was in his third year and was helping run the first-year orientation. Instead of doing his job and circulating around the tables, he kept finding his way back to mine. We’ve been together ever since.”
Favourite date: When the couple was dating they attended a Gatineau Olympiques hockey game, and Jennifer got hit by a puck! Coincidentally, a month later Bobby was hired as the team’s assistant coach and went on to lead the team to a big success.
What attracted her to him: “His confidence and presence in a room. You can’t be around Bobby and not be drawn to him.”
What attracted him to her: “Her beautiful smile, and her ability to make everyone else in the room smile.”
Words they live by: “We are a team, win or lose. We’re in it together.”
Engagement story: Bobby planned to propose to Jennifer on her birthday, after asking for her father’s blessing. Unfortunately, Jennifer’s father suffered a heart attack that morning, before Bobby could pop the question. Later that night, Bobby explained to Jennifer what his original plan was for her birthday. “As we left the house Bobby was acting strange, and he finally took my hand on the front step. It wasn’t until halfway through his speech that I realized he was asking me to be his wife.” The next day, the nurses assured everybody that Jennifer’s dad was well enough to hear the good news. Jennifer says, “It was the happy news everyone needed at a hard time.”
The Wedding Day
Wedding date: August 21, 2009
Guests: 250
Wedding theme: Classy hockey
Her best moment: “Standing in the gazebo after signing our marriage licence and holding Bobby’s hand. I knew there was nowhere else I wanted to be."
His best moment: “Watching her turn the corner and walk down the aisle with her dad.”
Best surprise of the day: “It was pouring rain at noon, and we thought our five o’clock ceremony was going to be moved indoors. To our surprise, the clouds cleared and the sun came out around two o’clock.”
What they would have done differently: They wish they’d gotten married earlier in the day. “Waiting until 5 p.m. to see and talk to each other on such an exciting day was the hardest part.”
Advice they would give to other couples: “Try and enjoy every moment because the day goes by so fast, and you’ll want to remember it all.”
Wedding song: "Have a Little Faith in Me,"by John Hiatt. “We chose this song because one day it came on the radio, and we danced to it in the kitchen.”
Favourite wedding gift: “New phones from our registry—they’re a big improvement over the old one.”
The day in three words: “Game, winner, good.”
Honeymoon: The pair enjoyed a holiday at Sonesta Great Bay Beach Resort in St. Maarten.
What made her day: “Dancing with my new husband at the end of the night, and knowing I wouldn’t have changed a thing.”
What made his day: “All of our family being there to share the day with us.”
Favourite wedding detail: Jennifer and Bobby had black hockey jerseys made with their monogram on the front, and “Brooks ’09” on the back for the wait and bar staff to wear.
